Introduction

The United Arab Emirates Federation (UAE) is located on the eastern coast of the Arab-Persian Peninsula. This federal republic, headed by President Khalifa ben Zayed al-Nahyan, is 77,700 square kilometers and consists of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi (67,350 km²), Dubai (3,885 km²), Sharjah (2,590 km²), Ras Al-Khaimah ( 1684 km²), Fujairah (1165km²), Umm Al-Quwain (777 km²) and Ajman (259km²). Its flag consists of three horizontal stripes of the same size, the first of green color representing fertility, the second of white color for neutrality, the third of black color for petroleum resources, the horizontal strip of red color for the unit; this color being the color present in all the flags of the emirates before their unifications in 1971 (joined by Ras Al-Khaimah in 1972). The flag thus incorporates the four pan-Arab colors.

The official language remains Arabic even if English is understood by all. Other languages such as Persian, Hindi or Urdu are spoken. English remains however the preferred language in the trade. In 2013, the emirate population had 9,031 million official resi- dents, of which about 19% were Emirati, 23% were Arab and Iranian, and 50% were South Asian (mainly Indians, about 1.7 million). (2010) or Pakistani 0.8 million (2010) and 8% of other ethnic groups About 80% of the population of the Arab emirates is Muslim, mostly Sunni. Also 8% Hindu, about 5% Christian as well as some Buddhist and Sikh minorities.

Since 1971, the currency of the Arab Emirates is the UAE Dirham. With an HDI of 0.818 in 2012, a literacy rate of 76.7% (2008-2012), a GNI per capita of $ 36,040 in 2012 an adult literacy rate of 90% (2012). Despite a strong index of human development with the strong waves of immigration from Asia it is unbalanced. However the analysis from the HDI is not faithful to the situation of the country. Indeed, although it shows a strong HDI reality reveals inequalities due to waves of immigration from Asia.

The country is member of the UN since its creation in 1971 and of the WTO since 1996. It is related with the United States and France by defenses agreements are members of the countries of the Arab League, of the organization of the Islamic Confederation, OPEC and CCEAG.

Conclusion

The United Arab Emirates is an icon of the oil power, having developed during the twentieth century. For a long time oil served them as a source of wealth, and so they accumulated their national wealth which they nevertheless chose to partially redistribute to the Emiratis. The accumulated petrodollars have allowed them to gain weight economically and diplomatically.

However, the new geopolitical challenges for the United Arab Emirates are numerous and complex because of the rise of this State and its strategic location in the Gulf. Its economic wealth allows it to finance an important security effort. Faced with the Iranian threat and Saudi greed, the country has a broad policy of prevention through diplomacy, control of populations and borders, strengthening its alliances and military capabilities.

But this dynamic of growth on all levels (economic, financial, demographic in particular) requires an internal and regional security policy in an area of permanent instability (three major conflicts since 1990, the threat of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, that of the terrorist al-Qaeda). The outbreak of the global economic crisis in October 2008 may be an element of additional tension.
