Presentation of
the country
Currently, the
civil war rages against the system of Bashar al-Assad who succeeded his father
Hafez al-Assad in 2000, who had himself seized power in 1970. Bashar governs as
part of the party Bass, a single party in Syria, whose authoritarianism is
challenged by the Syrian people, in the context of the Arab Spring. The Syrian
flag was chosen in 1980, it succeeds four other different designs of flags
since the independence of the country, which shows the instability that the
country knew before 1970. This flag was originally that of the old United Arab
Republic which disappeared in 1961, and it consists of three horizontal stripes
which are, from top to bottom, red, white and black. Two green stars complete
the picture, symbolizing Egypt and Syria. The four colors represent pan-Arab
colors, found for example on the flags of Egypt, Yemen, Sudan and Iraq.
The Syrian
population contains about 21,600,000 inhabitants at the end of 2013.
Nevertheless, since the beginning of 2011, the country knows a strong
demographic decline, due to the internal conflict which pushes the populations
suffering the repercussions of the clashes to take refuge with the neighbors,
and in particular Lebanon , land of refuge of minorities, and which caused the
death of a large number of Syrians (about 25,000). The territory is 185180 km2,
it is in the Near East, and it has 5 borders with other countries. Syria has
around Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel, and has the Mediterranean Sea
in the west of the country. The Syrian territory consists of a limestone
plateau with ancient volcanoes, and is crossed the Euphrates to the northeast.
The country is arid, and must import half of its water from neighboring
countries, while exploiting too much its own groundwater. The capital of Syria
is Damascus.
The official
language is Arabic, but the majority of the population speaks a Syrian-Arabic
dialect of Arabic, Syrian Arabic. That we find in Lebanon or Palestine. Russian,
second language used, and English are also widely spoken, as well as Turkish
and French to a lesser extent. There are also other minority languages such as Armenian, Kurdish, Turkmen, Cherkess or Aramaic. Chinese is also
increasingly used, as well as German and Persian. We thus find a dominant
language, but also a desire for openness with the learning of many other
languages.
Syria is a
territory where a large number of ethnic groups live together. The majority
ethnicities are Shiites (Alawites) and Sunnis. Shiites have control of power
with the Bass Party, even though three-quarters of the country is Sunni, and
they are opposed to Shiites who make up only 10 percent of the population. The
conflict, at the beginning revolutionary, becomes besides an ethnic conflict
with the opposition between the two parts. There are also many other ethnic
groups, such as Christians (7% of the population), Kurds (10%), Kurds, Turkmen,
Assyrians, and many others in the minority.
Here is a map
showing the location of the different ethnic groups in Syria:
The official
currency is the Syrian pound, or "read". One pound equals one hundred
dollars, and currently one euro equals 186.72 pounds.
Regarding the
HDI, an indicator based on life expectancy at birth, education level and
standard of living, it is in the Syrian Arab Republic of 0.648 in 2012, which
places the country in a central position, with nevertheless an increase
compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, this HDI will inevitably pay the
price of the current conflict, and will undoubtedly deteriorate in the years
that follow.
After this brief
overview of the context through the presentation of the country, let us now
look in more detail at the risks associated with it.
