Form of State :
Austria is a democratic and sovereign
Federal Republic since the Treaty of
Staatsvertarg from 1955. Its constitution
dates from 1920 and was modified in 1929.
Languages :
The official language of the country is
German. It is spoken by 98% of Austrians. However, there are minority languages
such as Slovene, Serbo-Croatian or Hungarian.
Ethnics:
6 different ethnic groups are recognized
in this country:
- Croatians
- Hungarian
- Slovenes
- Czechs
- Slovaks
- Roma (recognized in 1993)
The currency:
Austria's currency is the euro since 1
January 2002.
HDI and demographics:
The population is about 8.2 million. The
most populated Länder is Vienna. The growth of the population is mainly located
in the western Länder such as Salzburg or Tyrol.
Austria had the 18th best HDI in the
world in 2012 in front of France for example. After adjusting for inequality,
it was 0.837.
Political Risk Assessment:
Austrian political life is dominated by
two political parties: the SPO and the OVP. The first is a social-democratic
party, the second is a Christian-democratic-conservative party. However, two
other, younger parties have taken considerable importance since the early
2000s. The OPS, a nationalist party that in 2000 created an alliance with the
OVP to govern. The last party is Die Grunen (Greens), which is an ecologist
political party created in 1978 and whose importance in the Austrian political
scene is growing.
Institutions and governments are stable
and the country has not experienced internal conflicts since the end of the
Second World War. It is considered, by Transparency International, as a country
little corrupt, because it gets a score of 69/100 (100 representing an absence
of corruption). This indicator shows that the public sector is well managed by
the authorities and that there is little abuse.
Austria has one of the lowest homicide
rates in the world. In fact, with 0.6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, the
country ranks 11th in the world. The country is one of the safest in the world,
on top of that it maintains good relations with its neighboring countries and
has no conflicts with them.
economic
GDP / capita: $ 47,226
GDP growth rate: 0.8%
Inflation rate: 1.4%
Budget balance: -2.6%
Current balance: 2%
External debt: 75%
Trade balance: + $ 14 billion in 2012
Stable exchange rate: Euro stable.
On the basis of all these elements it can
be concluded that the economic situation in Austria is very good. The rate of
inflation is controlled, it remains below 2% which is very good for the growth
of the economy. The country meets the Maastricht criterion for the budget
balance (it must be less than 3%), but the external debt is too high. Indeed,
the U.E. advocates an external debt representing 60% of GDP.
The country's trade balance has improved
significantly since the early 1990s and will continue, according to forecasts
from the Université de Sherbrooke, to grow steadily.
Finally, Austria is a member of the EU,
but also of the euro area which reinforces the feeling of confidence that the
previous figures give us on the economic health of the country.
Geographical risks:
Austria has for many years provided for
plans in the event of earthquakes or climatic or health disasters.
The risk of such events remains low.
Conclusion
Austria, which experienced a very
difficult period during the Second World War, has developed rapidly. It took
advantage of its geographical position to strengthen its economy and build a
solid state where various ethnicities live in peace. However, the country does
not have a very important place on the international scene because it has no
army and is considered a neutral country.
