Jamaica, located in the Caribbean Sea, is
the third largest island in the Caribbean archipelago after Cuba and the island
of Hispaniola Surrounded by Spanish-speaking countries, its official
language is English (but many Jamaicans speak Jamaican Creole, a mixture of
English, Spanish and African languages) . At the end of the 15th century,
the island, then populated by the Arawak, was conquered by the Spaniards, then
by the British in the XVII. The island is at the center of the triangular
trade, ensuring a cheap African labor force. These shifts of populations form
today a people with diverse origins: in 2012, the census indicated a 2,707,805
Jamaican [3]. "Out of Many, One People" [4], the national motto, perfectly
reflects the many roots of the Jamaican people. The HDI of this multicultural
society is 0.727 [5], a fairly high index that places Jamaica close to the
world average. However, this index is not indicative of the large disparities
that exist in the population.
At the time of its independence in August
1962, Jamaica chose a British-inspired parliamentary regime. As part of the
Commonwealth, its head of state is the Queen of England, represented by a
Governor General, currently Mr. Patrick Allen. The latter is in charge of
appointing the Prime Minister and Cabinet [6]. It was also in the early 1960s
that Jamaica gained monetary independence with the creation of the Bank of
Jamaica. In 1969, the Jamaican pound will be replaced by the Jamaican dollar
(JMD). Its value as of November 26, 2013 is as follows: 1USD = 102.95 JMD and
1EUR = 139.42 JMD.
With a per capita GDP of $ 5,140 in 2012
[13] (against $ 39,771 for France.) Jamaica is ranked 117th in the world,
closely following Cuba but far ahead of its neighbor Haiti. Struck hard by the
economic crisis of 2008, Jamaica is struggling to recover and knows a negative
growth rate in 2012: - 0.3% annual change [14]. Although the annual inflation
rate has been declining since 2010: 6.9% inflation in 2012, the Jamaican economy
suffers from structural problems:
- A deficit trade balance of up to 25% of
GDP [15]
- A deficit balance also at -6% of GDP
[16]
- A current account deficit: - 8% [17]
In addition, it will be added that the
external debt amounts to 58% of GDP in 2011 [18], a rather high figure,
reflecting a significant financial risk in the event of fluctuation of the
national currency. Since 2011, the JMD-EUR exchange rate has steadily declined
to a rate of 0.00711 (it was 0.009 in December 2011). [19]
The numbers do not present the Jamaican
economy as a healthy economy. Government efforts are needed to revive slower
growth. The financial assistance granted by the IMF in March 2013 still
demonstrates a return of confidence on the part of international institutions.
In addition, it should be noted that the Jamaican economy is 50% dependent on a
strong and sustainable tourism industry and is "one of the largest
producers of bauxite in the world (about 15 million tonnes per year) and fourth
place in terms of reserve »
Political and economic risks are the main
risks taken into account by foreign investors. They also depend heavily on each
other. But a country's economy also goes hand-in-hand with the geographical and
environmental risks that exist there, and this is particularly the case of the
island of Jamaica.
CONCLUSION
Jamaica, an island state in the Caribbean
Sea, is characterized by a major tourism industry. It is also one of the
leading exporters of bauxite and alumina. However, it suffers from a fragile
general economy, chronic social insecurity and a high rate of corruption. These
negative points undermine the image of Jamaica which repels foreign investors.
