camels
Do you know the
Mighty Camels, the Dubai hockey team? With 4 or 5 camels per square kilometer,
the UAE is one of the world's richest countries in camelids! This "gift of
God", as the Arabs call it, was once essential to the hard life of the
Bedouins.
The tribes,
semi-nomads, moved from pasture grazing during the winter, before returning to
the oasis for the harvest of dates. The only means of transport, the dromedary
also supplied milk and leather. His hair, woven, allowed to make canvases of
tents, carpets and clothes.
On special
occasions, a festive meal or a visit from a dignitary, a male was killed and
shared. Even the shoulder blades were reused to serve as slates to children!
Modern camels are particularly famous during winter races (see
"Sports"). The most titled animals are traded for millions of
dollars.
Falconry
This activity,
formerly reserved for Sheikhs, is widely promoted by the ruling families of Abu
Dhabi and Dubai. Inaugurated in 2006, the National Falcon Center in Nad al
Sheba (Dubai) houses a museum and a real falcon souk, where you can buy trained
birds and all the necessary equipment.
Traditionally
caught during their fall migration, falcons (pilgrims and sacred) are now bred
in captivity. Each is identified by a "passport" to limit traffic.
Originally, the
animals were quickly erected in anticipation of the arrival of the houbaras,
the bustards, favorite prey of falconers. Hats and gazelles were also hunted.
Falcons were released in the spring to allow them to resume their migration.
The UAE has led a
lobbying movement to adopt falconry into UNESCO's Intangible Heritage of
Humanity, which was done in 2010. International competitions are organized at
the International Exhibition Hunting and Equestrian Sports Abu Dhabi (ADIHEX).
The falcon is even on all banknotes!
Pearl fishing
Practiced for at
least a thousand years in the Persian Gulf, pearl fishing reached its peak in
the 1900s. There were then some 1,200 boats devoted to this single activity in
the ports of the current Emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras
al-Khaimah in particular. It is partly because of this activity that some
Bedouin tribes abandoned their semi-nomadic way of life to settle on the coast,
favoring the development of cities.
The fishing was
practiced only in summer, between the 5th and the 9th lunar month, with about
50 daily freediving dives. Needless to say, many did not come back.
Accessories: a
nose clip, gloves, a basket and a big rock to go down faster ...
Many of the
tribes from the Liwa oases settled on the island of Sir Bani Yas, where they
organized cooperatives. The captain received the lion's share, followed by the
divers, then those who assisted them. However, it is the traders who have the
most profits. Some of the money was set aside to finance the next year's
expedition. In the winter, divers returned to the oases to care for their palm
groves. Activity declined from the 1940s.
A pearl farm was
established in 2005 against Ras el Khaima at the initiative of a Japanese
entrepreneur. It produces 40,000 pearls a year, mostly sold in the Gulf
countries, where their yellow color is appreciated.
