The Kingdom of Bahrain (literally
"the two seas") is an archipelago located near the west coast of the
Persian Gulf in the Middle East. The island of Bahrain is the largest territory
of this archipelago which is directly connected to Saudi Arabia with the help
of the pavement of King Fahd.
Since 2002, the constitutional monarchy
has been proclaimed by the present king Hamed ben Issa al-Khalifa and becomes a
state.
In this archipelago the official language
is Arabic despite a strong presence of English as well as Persian and some
Indian languages. Nevertheless Bahraini Arabic is the dialect most commonly
used in this Islamic state.
This diversity of languages is explained by a multitude of
expatriates who represent more than half of the population of this island.
These workers, mostly men, come mainly from Southeast Asia and Iran.
Islam is the state religion, accounting
for more than 80% of the population in 2001. Nevertheless, a strong Shia
community represents more than 70% of Muslims while the royal family is Sunni.
However, with the arrival of these expatriates Christianity as well as other
religions are gaining importance in this country.
In 2010, a national census revealed that
the country has about 1 200 000 inhabitants. They are concentrated mainly in
the north of the country in the capital Manama, creating a single urban area.
Bahrain is the fourth most densely populated sovereign state, not counting
city-states.
Expatriates and Bahrainis have a high HDI
of 0.796. It ranks the country 48th out of 187 countries in the world, which
makes Bahrain a developed country. The literacy rate approaches 90% and their
currency, the Bahraini Dinar is stable and has a fixed value against the dollar
of 1 USD = 0.376 BHD.
All this information on the level of
economic and human development indicates that Bahrain falls into the category
of "northern countries".
It is clear that Bahrain has established
itself in the regional economy as well as in the world economy through its
diversified, liberalized and open economy. Its economic indicators and its
position as a regional financial center make it possible to attract foreign
investors. However, a heavy reliance on foreign labor as well as strong
tensions between Shiites and Sunnis lead to an increase in the public debt and
deteriorate the image of the country. Despite these internal upheavals,
tourism, infrastructure upgrades and foreign investment have allowed the
Kingdom of Bahrain to experience strong growth in 2013. The Kingdom has
excellent relations with Western countries and its Arab neighbors. The capital
Manama is in direct contact with the United States, which has made it its
military base in this strategic location of the Golf.
