After you left, the owner did some renovations. You dispute the invoice

You have left the accommodation that you have occupied for several years, and you receive an invoice from your former owner for the repair work of the apartment. You believe that all or part of this invoice is not your responsibility. Reply to your ex-lessor by registered letter to let him know your disagreement.

How long does it take to redo the tapestries and paintings, or to change the carpets? Apart from the social sector, where the issue is most often settled by collective agreement, this equipment has no official lifespan. But it is generally estimated that they cannot last more than seven to ten years, depending on their quality. This can be a basis for discussion.

Dear,

You sent me an invoice of (…) euros for the restoration of the tapestries and carpets of the apartment that I left on (date) last.

(1st case) I absolutely deny owing you anything: the inventory that we established at the time of my departure does not mention any degradation that is attributable to me. On the contrary, it describes accommodation in good used condition. If you have seen fit to refurbish this accommodation, it is your responsibility to bear the costs.

(2nd case) I do not deny that work had to be done and that some damage is attributable to me, but I refuse to assume all of these costs. Indeed, I occupied this accommodation for (…) years, during which it suffered normal wear and tear: the upholstery and carpets were therefore (largely) depreciated.

(Optional) I therefore suggest that you take responsibility for (…)% of this invoice, and I await your response to send you the corresponding amount.

Please accept, Madam, Sir, the expression of my best regards.
