الحياة في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة

Useful information and practical life on the spot United Arab Emirates

Jet lag

The UAE is 2 hours ahead of mainland Europe in summer and 3 hours in winter. When it is noon in Paris, it is 14h in Abu Dhabi in July and 15h in December.

Electricity

Voltage: 220-240 V, 50 Hz. The three pin square sockets are the same as in England. Most hotels have adapters.

Opening time

In the first place, remember that the "weekend" here is built around Friday, the day of the Great Prayer, and Saturday. As a general rule, schedules are reduced during Ramadan.

- The offices operate from 7:30 to 15h, the shops from 9h to 19h, with a break in the afternoon (generally 13h-16h), except sometimes in shopping centers, which remain open until 22h. Some shops open on Friday afternoons.

- Post offices observe very variable schedules. In big cities, they generally open Saturday to Wednesday from 8h to 13h and 16h to 19h (20h for the main office of Dubai on Thursday), the smallest from 8h to 15h.

- Museums are often closed on Mondays and Fridays, sometimes also at siesta time, as in Sharjah. Some parks and museums reserve slots for women (one day or one afternoon per week).

Holidays

Most lunar festivals depend on the Islamic calendar.

- January 1st: New Year
- Islamic New Year (Al-Hijra): variable date.
- Birth of the Prophet (Mouloud): variable date.
- Ascension of the Prophet (Leilat al-Meiraj): variable date.
- August 6: anniversary of the accession to power of Sheikh Zayed (Abu Dhabi): variable date.
- End of Ramadan (Eid ul-Fitr): variable date.
- Feast of sacrifice (Eid al-Adha): variable date.
2 December: Emirates National Day.

languages

Arabic, of course. Having said that, the presence of a very large foreign community means that practically everything is done in English. It is a little more complicated in Ras el Khaima and, especially, in Fujairah.

Photo

Absolutely avoid photographing people, especially women, without asking for their approval. We saw edgy families on shopping mall parking because they thought they were on the picture!

Savoir-vivre and customs

Society by essence Muslim, the Emirates live largely according to Shari'a and the precepts of Islam. Admittedly, foreign women are not required to veil themselves, although they are allowed to drive, but it is better not to take out his best cleavage, his mini-skirt or his Brazilian swimsuit ...

Do not flirt in public (even if you are already in a relationship): it is an offense (possibly) punishable by jail! Same punishment if you eat or drink in public during the day during Ramadan. Cohabitation is theoretically illegal and homosexuality is punishable by law.

Telephone and Internet

Phone

- From abroad to the United Arab Emirates: the code for the UAE is 971. Then dial the local code (Abu Dhabi 02, Al Ain 03, Dubai 04, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm al-Qaïwain 06, Ras el Khaima 07, Fujairah 09) without the initial 0, then the 7-digit number. From one emirate to another, add the number 0. Cell phone numbers start with 050.
- From the United Arab Emirates abroad: access to the international network is 00, followed by the desired country code (Belgium 32, Canada 1, France 33, Switzerland 41) and the correspondent's number, without the initial 0.

- Domestic calls: calls between fixed telephones are free within each emirate.

Phone cards are sold in supermarkets, petrol stations and some shops (30 to 45 Dh). Reduced rate on weekdays from 14h to 16h and from 19h to 7h, Friday and some holidays.

Internet

Fixed Internet access is widespread in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, not so much elsewhere. The wifi is available in most hotels, at the airport, in a large number of cafes and some shopping centers, but at a rather high price: 2 Dh per minute ...
Censorship is quite widespread for everything related to sexuality, to Israel or comments on local politics.
