companies
The competition
is fierce between Emirates, the Dubai company, Etihad Airways, attached to Abu
Dhabi, and the low cost Sharjah, Air Arabia.
Emirates and
Etihad offer good value for an unbelievable number of destinations in Europe,
Africa and Asia, making stops in the United Arab Emirates for a connection.
Everything is done to encourage these stops, possible at no extra charge.
Air Arabia will
appeal to long-term travelers seeking exoticism. The company primarily serves
the Gulf countries and those from which emigrant workers from the UAE come
from: India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Jordan, Syria,
Kazakhstan, Armenia, Afghanistan, Kenya, Greece.
airports
Dubai
International Airport is the largest of the emirates. It now has 3 terminals,
including 1 terminal exclusively dedicated to Emirates. These terminals are
connected by shuttles. Dubai Airport is known for its double air and commercial
vocation: there are indeed gigantic duty free shopping centers.
A second airport,
the Al Maktoum International Airport, announced as the largest in the world,
opened in 2010 in the port city of Jebel Ali (closer to the seaside area). For
the moment, it only accepts cargo planes, but must gradually open up to
commercial flights.
Smaller, the Abu
Dhabi International Airport has grown exponentially since the launch of Etihad
Airways by the government of the emirate in 2004. There are also 3 terminals.
Etihad operates a dozen weekly Paris-Abu Dhabi flights.
Located less than
20 km from Dubai (an aberration), the Sharjah airport receives especially,
apart from Air Arabia, second-class airline flights.
An international
airport is being built in Ajman, the smallest of the 7 emirates. It is
scheduled to be operational in 2015. The airports of Ras al-Khaimah and
Fujairah are of no use to European travelers.
Train
Nothing of the
kind in the United Arab Emirates for the time, although Sheikh Khalifa signed
in July 2009 a decree envisaging the creation of a company of railways ...
The Palm Jumeirah
Monorail, an automated monorail, connects Palm Jumeirah Island to the mainland
(see transport in Dubai).
Bus
The choice in
this area is quite limited. We can especially count on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi line
served by Emirates Express, with connections every 40 min. The trip lasts 2
hours. Departure to Dubai from Al Ghubaibah Bus Station and Abu Dhabi from
Hazza bin Zayed Terminal. Price: 20 Dhs.
Another option is
Al Ghazal, which offers the option of a continuation to Sharjah. Departures
from Abu Dhabi every 45 minutes from Defense Road. Price: 20 Dhs.
In addition to
urban services, Abu Dhabi Municipality Transport provides a connection to Al
Ain, with departures every 30 minutes. Price: 18 Dhs. There is also an Al
Ain-Dubai link with Al Ghazal.
Dubai, Abu Dhabi
and Al Ain have very cheap urban bus lines. Plan to have change, drivers rarely
have enough. To encourage public transport, Abu Dhabi has set up a set of
air-conditioned stops!
One of the few
international bus lines accessible to Westerners is the one that connects Dubai
to Muscat (Oman) via the oasis of Hatta, with 3 or 4 daily departures, morning
or afternoon. The trip lasts 5h to 5h45. Sharjah is also served twice a day (7
hours) and Abu Dhabi once (6:30 am to 7:00 am).
The connections
to Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt require crossing Saudi Arabia, which does not
issue a transit visa to non-Muslims.
Car
Difficult to move
effectively to the Emirates without a car. A rental car is not very expensive,
the roads are excellent and the gas is not expensive (around 50-60 € the full).
We drive on the
right and the road signs are translated into English.
