Environment
Oman is home to many animals and plants
that vary in climate and topography and are subject to government protection.
The boswellia or incense tree has been
used since ancient times in religious ceremonies. Also called oliban, incense
is a whitish gum (whose aromatic resin penetrates the bark) that must be
dissolved and distilled to produce the essential oil. The trees of the family
Burseraceae grow in the Dhofar region. The essential oil of incense is
invigorating and energizing, it prevents the infections of the respiratory
tracts, has an anti-inflammatory effect, anti-pain, cicatrisant and soothing.
Its scent is balsamic spicy, sweet and hot.
In the desert, animal (and even
vegetable) life is surprisingly present. In the expanses of sand and rock live
various varieties of gerboises, mice, hares and fennecs. There are also skinks,
many Lacertilians (desert lizards, kinds of geckos), snakes (including the very
poisonous desert cobra and the horned viper), scorpions, beetles and
grasshoppers.
Protected animals include the houbara
bustard, the monitor lizard, the dharb (big spiny lizard), the thar (wild goat)
and the Arabian oryx, a species for which a "sanctuary" had been
erected. The sanctuary of the Arabian Oryx was a nature reserve, one of the
largest protected areas in the region. This area of the Arabian Desert is home to, in
addition to various endangered species, the only herd of wild oryx in the
world. The site, which was on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was removed from
the list in 2007. This exceptional decision was motivated by the fact that the
State unilaterally decided to reduce the protected area by 90%.
