Jet lag
Qatar is 2h ahead of continental Western
Europe in winter and 1h from April to October (the country does not apply
daylight saving time).
Electricity
220-240 V, 50 Hz. The sockets are the
same as in Great Britain (type G), with three large rectangular pins; there are
also sometimes old catches with three big round pins as in India (type D).
Remember to bring an adapter.
Opening time
The work week begins on Sunday and ends
on Thursday. Banks close at least on Fridays, often also on Saturdays. Many are
open from 7.30 am to 1 pm, but some are working a little longer (until 2 pm to
3 pm) or reopen in the evening (4 pm to 5 pm to 7 pm to 9 pm, or even later).
Qatar is full of supermarkets and
shopping centers with very extended schedules: the first generally open from 8
am or 9h to 23h-2h, the latter from 9h or 10h to 22h-23h (except Friday morning
for some). "Family days" reserved for women and children (forbidden
men!) Are now rare in shopping centers, but they persist at the beach and in
the parks.
During Ramadan, almost all businesses
take a long break in the middle of the day, especially on Friday at the time of
the Great Prayer - if they are not completely closed that day. At this time,
the cafes open only at dusk (17:30 or 18:00) but close very late (2h-4h). The
restaurants of the big hotels are open all day for non-Muslims.
languages
The official language is Arabic, but
English is understood by a very large majority of inhabitants: it serves as a
lingua franca between Qataris and immigrant workers.
Media
In its desire to spread, Qatar has also
invested in the media, including through the chain of information in Arabic
Al-Jazeera, founded in 1996 by former Emir Hamad ben Khalifa al Thani - father
of the current.
The country intends to make its voice
heard and present its own grid of major world events, rather than depend on
Western or Saudi media. Its treatment of information and its proximity to
certain Islamist actors have repeatedly won the wrath of the US administration
- and even the bombing of its Afghan and Iraqi offices ...
On television as in the print media, the
freedom of your tone remains very controlled. Any criticism of the Emir and the
ruling family is out of place, any investigation of the controversial subjects
immediately swept away. Several European journalists still bore the brunt in
2014 and 2015, who were arrested while trying to investigate the working
conditions of foreign workers on the 2022 World Cup yards.
The new law on cybercrime should make no
difference, since it constitutes a criminal offense "any content
undermining social values." In Al-Jazeera itself, in 2010, five presenters
resigned jointly to denounce the pressure on their dress code.
Telephone and Internet
Phone
To call Qatar from abroad, dial 00 974,
followed by the 8-digit number (there is no code). In the opposite direction,
dial 00, the country code (32 Belgium, 33 France, 41 Switzerland), then the
number of the correspondent without the initial 0.
For your mobile phone, you will be able
to buy a local Sim card for a predetermined amount from one of the two Qatari
operators, both represented at the airport: Ooredoo (ex-Q-Tel) and Vodafone
Qatar. Ooredoo has the best coverage and the best bit rate in 4G, where
Vodafone only captures in the city centers.
The Ooredoo Hala card will give you 350
minutes of local calls and 250 MB from 25 QR (validity: 7 days). There is also
a package starting from 10 QR only. The Vodafone Red Card works on a similar
principle, it comes back a little cheaper.
For your international calls, Ooredoo's
Dawli card offers quite good rates: 1.5 QR / min for Europe (1 QR from 7pm to
7am and Friday).
Internet
Wifi is available in all hotels
(sometimes only at the reception). There are also hotspots everywhere (parks).
Know that the Internet is pretty much censored in Qatar, as far as sensitive or
pornographic political content is concerned - but also sometimes for more benign sites (sexual education for example).
