Qatar Transportation
Plane
Qatar is a hub of air traffic to Asia and
Africa thanks to the national airline Qatar Airways, known for its attractive
rates. There is usually a stop-over of a few days en route to another
destination.
If you are in transit and you have a time
between 5h and 12h, you can benefit from a free guided tour of Doha offered by
Qatar Airways! Even the visa is included !!! Four departures are offered every
day, at 8h, 11h, 16h and 20h (registration at least 1h before, subject to
availability, the groups being limited to 22 people). Duration: around 2:45
Make your way to the Doha City Tour ticket office, located between the
Mont-Blanc and WH Smith boutiques.
Qatar Airways flights to other Gulf
countries are, on the other hand, proportionately expensive. There, we advise
you rather Emirates and the low cost Flydubai; from 50-70 € one way to Dubai.
Inaugurated in 2014, the new Hamad
International Airport includes some 70 duty-free shops, more than 30
restaurants and cafés, games and rest areas (with showers), Internet kiosks,
free wifi, etc. Bus No. 777 (every 15 minutes) takes you to the city center
(Corniche, then West Bay hotels).
ferry
The old ferry connecting Qatar to Bahrain
has been suspended for several years, pending the construction of a bridge,
announced for 2022.
Bus
Local buses, introduced only in 2005, are
comfortable, air conditioned and not very expensive. Easy to identify (they are
turquoise!), They effectively serve the great Doha but also allow to win, for
example, Al-Khor (line No. 102x, every 1h), Dukhan (No. 104 and 104A, every 2
hours) ) and Messaieed (No. 109, every 30 minutes) from Al Ghanim Central Bus
Station. Impossible to pay in cash: you will have to buy a rechargeable
electronic card (Karwa smart card). Departures every 30-45 minutes ... or 2h or
3h on some lines!
The pink West Bay Shuttle serves the main
points of interest of the Doha "center" with two lines: the red runs
along the Corniche around the general post office (south) to West Bay and the W
hotel (north); the blue runs on an axis parallel in the interior of the
grounds. Free, it passes every 15 minutes.

Metro
As part of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has
launched a major project to build a metro (inauguration planned for 2019). It
should have 100 stations and will serve in particular the international
airport.

Rental car
To explore the country a bit and not
succumb to the overwhelming heat, in this far-reaching Doha, devoid of street
names in places, nothing beats a good old car rental. Rates are affordable and
the road network is good. Certainly, many drivers behave rather as if they were
fighting in the arena, supporting who-better-on the mushroom and the horn ...
In Doha, traffic jams are becoming more
frequent. On the other hand, as soon as you leave the city to the west, you are
soon alone in the middle of the desert.
The speed limit is 60-80 km / h in
inhabited areas and 120 km / h on main roads. Beware, however, wandering
dromedaries (especially at night) and very hot weather that can blow up the
tires!
It may be tempting to venture into the
southern erg to offer, like the Qataris, a dune bashing session. Still, it is
better to have the experience of driving in the desert and ... an express
authorization from the car rental company! Vehicle reversals on the very steep
slopes of the dunes are routine and insurance will decline any support. And we
do not even talk about the "simple" risk of repeated silting ... If
you were to try this kind of adventure, make sure you have enough water and
provisions on board, and carry your mobile to call for help as needed.
Otherwise, be careful, the blood alcohol
level is set at 0% and the policy applies a zero tolerance. The penalties can
be very heavy - foreign or not. It is also forbidden to use one's mobile phone
while driving, and it is compulsory to fasten one's belt to the front.
In the event of an accident, even minor,
it is imperative to remain on the spot while waiting for the arrival of the
police (tel .: 999). In case of bodily injury, do not move the damaged vehicle,
even if it hinders the traffic; the persons involved are then generally placed
in police custody pending the police report.
Finally, good news: gas is almost given:
about € 0.30 per liter!
taxis
Those who do not rent a car usually use
taxis (karwa), turquoise like buses (they belong to the same company). They
have a meter and their rates are very affordable: 4 QR of support and 1.2 QR /
km. Only problem: many are newcomers and do not know the city well yet ... You
can try to catch them in flight, but you will have more chances to the heads of
station located in front of the malls.
To call a taxi (4 QR alternate), call
4458 8888.
