Transport Syria
Remember that it is currently not
advisable to travel to Syria.
As almost everywhere in developing
countries, it is mostly by bus that one moves inside Syria. These are varied,
very cheap, punctual, numerous and cover almost the entire territory.
The only minor difficulty (and still) is
that the destinations in the bus stations are usually only indicated in Arabic
(do not hesitate to ask).
Whatever the means of transport, to buy a
ticket, you must present your passport.
Bus
Even the most remote villages are
connected to big cities by bus or minibus. They constitute a great school of
social relations.
- Pullman bus and VIP bus: several large
reliable private companies like Kadmous, Al-Ahlia and Super Tours (recent).
Certain advantage in summer: air conditioning! Of all these companies, Kadmous
is perhaps not only the most organized, but also the one that serves the most
destinations. Prefer VIP buses, newer. For some trips, it is better to reserve
your place the day before, especially at the end of the week or during the
holidays.
- Regular buses: they are called
"hop-hop" because they often stop en route to board or disembark
passengers. They connect the big cities with each other, but also with the
average towns. Harder, less fast but also much cheaper than the Pullman.
Terminals sometimes eccentric and destinations not always identifiable. They
leave in principle as soon as complete. In the afternoon, the departures
stretch; in the evening, very little or not at all.
- Minibuses: also called
"hop-hop". Same principle as ordinary buses, but less distant
destinations. In general, they circulate in a radius of about sixty kilometers
around the big cities. It is the providence of the countryside. Between 20 and
30 seats, but often double passengers. They stop everywhere on a simple sign
(inevitable corollary, they are also very slow). Conditions of transport most
often spartan.
- Microbuses: generally vehicles with
10-12 seats, which serve as both urban buses and intercity transport (and
villages). More expensive but faster than minibuses. They also leave when they
are full. They roll like crazy!
Again, it is advisable to leave in the
morning because there are fewer buses in the afternoon. Reduced frequency on
some roads on Fridays.
To make sure the driver does not ask for
a "special tourist" fare, ask the passenger for the price next to
you. If your bag does not fit on your lap or in front of you, you will be
charged for the seat it occupies.
If there is room next to a person of the
same sex, prefer this place, even if, unlike Pullman buses, it is quite
acceptable for people of different sex to share the same seat.
Train
Few railway lines, transport mode much
less widespread and much slower than the bus. Very cheap however, which will
appeal to small budgets. Attention, the passport is requested at the time of
the purchase of the tickets. Not very practical (except for the link between
Lattakia-Aleppo and Damascus-Aleppo, with stops at Homs and Hama), with many
departures and arrivals at night.
Car and road
- Driving and condition of roads: the
road network is good. Driving in the city, on the other hand, is a feat. Very
dense traffic, no flashing or respect for routes or priorities, braking as late
as inempestive, overtaking on all sides ...
Be wary of stray animals or herds, carts
at night, cyclists, pedestrians ...
Highways are in principle limited to 110
km / h, although few Syrians seem to care. Always be attentive, even more on
the two-way roads where some crazy doublers squat the left lane, theoretically
yours if you arrive in front. Learn to use the horn.
Very dense network of paved roads. A few
rare dirt tracks too, for some archaeological sites. Of course, potholes and
corrugated tar sometimes unavoidable.
- Road signs: in Arabic language. Signs
indicating major directions or cities are generally translated into English, so
readable. Cepednant, in the countryside, you will often need to ask your way.
- A map for road maps: circulate with a
map bearing the place names in English AND Arabic, in case you ask for
directions.
- Gasoline is cheap (just under £ 40, or
£ 0.60 per liter). A lot of petrol stations. Be careful on small roads.
- Car rental: pay attention to the state
of the roads, therefore, and traffic. You must be at least 21 years old. In
addition to the national permit, the international permit is recommended (but
not required). If you pay in cash, the tariff of the renter will sometimes be
more interesting.
If trips between major cities do not pose
a particular problem, the most fortunate backpackers will have any interest in
renting a car with driver for less accessible excursions.
- Car rental companies: most major car
rental companies have an office at the Damascus airport. Reasonable prices:
from $ 50 (€ 35.70) per day (limited mileage) for the cheapest car, if you rent
several days. As everywhere, check the condition of the tires, lights and the
presence of the tools. It is possible to take the car to one place and return
it to another for an additional cost. Be careful, rental cars without drivers
can not cross the border.
- Rent a car with driver: count on
average 80-100 $ (57.10-71,40 €) per day, taxes included; Unlimited mileage.
Drivers sometimes speak a bit of English or French.
- Collective taxis: these are cars (often
old) called "services", which connect towns and villages. We leave as
soon as it is complete.
- Taxis: rental of the vehicle by the day.
Great if we are many to share the costs. The cost is totally dependent on the
previously defined conditions: time, route, rest time, etc.
- Stop: according to some, it works well
for tourists. In any case very popular among students and young Syrians. Girls
alone will be on their guard, but in principle men have no ulterior motives. By
politeness, once arrived, extend a coin to participate in the gas costs; but it
will most often be refused firmly ...
Urban transport
- Taxis: very numerous in the big cities
and recognizable by their canary yellow color and their appearance often
dilapidated. In the big cities, they have a counter that, in general, works. An
average race costs 20-40 S £ (0.30-0.60 €); up to £ 60 (€ 0.90) for slightly
longer trips. There is no night rate, the use is to multiply the price
displayed on the counter by 1.5.
Tip: Most taxi drivers do not know a word
of English. To make you understand, it is sometimes better to ask someone to
write in Arabic your destination on a piece of paper.
Small caveats: Many taxi drivers claim
that their meter (raddad) does not work (or they do not have one). Then
negotiate the price of the race when going up. If the driver refuses to agree
at a reasonable price, get off and stop the next taxi.
In addition, some taxi drivers have an
unfortunate tendency to set their own tips. Do not hesitate to stay firm and
stick to the margin that we have indicated above (about 20%). For this, of
course, you have to have change, because otherwise the driver cuts his last card:
to pretend (most of the time) not to be able to make the difference!
- Urban buses: also called
"services". Very numerous and very cheap. Unfortunately, it is always
difficult to know where you are going and where to stop. We recommend taxis,
much more convenient, or of course walking. On the other hand, for small
budgets, it may be interesting to know the minibuses that go to the bus
stations.
