Practical life Syria

Remember that it is currently not advisable to travel to Syria.

Jet lag

There is 1 hour difference with France, in summer as in winter, Syria changing time to a few days apart from Western Europe. When it is 18h in Paris, it is 19h in Damascus.

Electricity

Alternating current of 220 V. In the hotels, the catches are generally the same ones as in France. Not too many power cuts to deplore.

schedule

Administrations close on Fridays and Saturdays or Fridays. Banks close in the afternoon, museums close on Tuesdays (except a few), or even on Fridays for some smaller museums. The rest works every day.

The few times below are given as an indication.

- Tourist offices: theoretically every day except Friday from 9h to 20h.

- Post offices: in principle, every day except Friday from 8h (or 8h30) to 14h or 15h; some reopen from 5 pm to 8 pm or 9 pm for the postal service; some may be closed on Saturdays.

- Banks and exchange offices: the Commercial Bank of Syria opens from Monday to Thursday; sometimes Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30 or 13h, according to the agencies. Some have a foreign exchange office open from 8h to 20h. On the other hand, private bureaux de change generally open their doors every day except Friday from 10am to 8pm.

- Stores: tourist shops do not nap; others, yes. The first are usually open every day except Friday from 9h to 19h or 20h (closed earlier in summer), while the classic shops often close their doors for the meal between 14h and 16h (Syrians have lunch late). The shops in the souks of Damascus and Aleppo are generally open without interruption. But beware, the activity only intensifies in the middle of the morning and slows very strongly on Friday.

- Museums: every day except Tuesday from 9h to 18h (16h in winter). The so-called secondary museums (quite rare) close at 14h (more rarely at 15h) all year round. Sometimes closing also for prayer for about 1 hour (between 11:30 and 14h depending on the season).

- Archaeological sites: in general, every day until sunset. Some sites are not kept and therefore remain permanently accessible. We can then enjoy at dawn a light and beautiful, before the arrival of tourists ..

post
It takes about 2 to 3 weeks for grandma to receive your postcard. Stamps can be bought at major hotels and small tobacco shops, as well as at souvenir shops. It's much better than at the post office, where you often have to queue for a long time and, what's more, after finding the right ticket!
Telephone and telecommunications
Phone
- From France to Syria: dial 00 + 963 + city code (without the 0 preceding it) + number of the correspondent. For the price, contact your usual operator.
- From Syria to France: dial 00 + 33 + number of the correspondent without the initial 0 (to Belgium on 00 + 32, to Switzerland on 00 + 41 and to Canada on 00 + 1).
- Inland calls: from one city to another (eg from Damascus to Aleppo), dial the city code preceded by the 0, followed by the number of the correspondent.
- On the other hand, within the same city, within the same city (example: from Damascus to Damascus), we do not dial the city code, but directly the number of the correspondent.
To call abroad, avoid doing it from your hotel, it is overpriced. Even if you only talk for a few seconds, you are charged 3 minutes ($ 12!). But problem: there is almost no public phone on the street: the operator went bankrupt and the cabins are empty. Until when... ?
There are some coin-operated telephones in the bus stations or the shopping districts, but really not practical for the international!
The only solution is to go to the post office, which has card booths located either on its premises or outside.
Portable
If your subscription allows you, your mobile will automatically connect to the network of a Syrian operator. 2 main companies share the cake: Syriatel and MTN.
If you stay awhile, it is very advantageous to buy a SIM card on the spot, which will allow you to have a Syrian number. Count around £ 500 (€ 7.70), but there are also £ 1,000. You have to present your passport. If you bought your mobile phone from a European operator, you must have it unlocked beforehand, which is possible at no cost after a period of time depending on your type of contract. It can also be unlocked locally, but it is not necessarily given ... Before signing the contract and pay, try, if possible, the SIM card of the seller in your phone to check if it is compatible.
If you are a fan of SMS, better contact the company MTN.
communications
To call from a mobile phone to a landline, dial the city code preceded by 0 (even if you are already in the city in question).
Internet
President Bashar al-Assad, a fervent computer scientist, has worked hard for the development of the Internet in Syria. As a result, cybercafés are fairly easily found in big cities. Prices are low: around 60-70 S £ (0.90-1.10 €) per hour.
