Transport and Travel Jordan

taxis

Group taxis or four-seater "service" taxis depart only when all seats are occupied. A little more expensive than buses, they are much faster. Like these, "service" taxis have fixed and regular lines. It is better to talk a little bit about Arabic to tell the driver where to go.
Collective taxis are white, while private taxis, or specials, are yellow.
In Amman, they are equipped with a meter, which they must use. Avoid asking "how much? "Say," meter, please! ". Drivers sometimes add tips spontaneously. Practice not always very pleasant. It's up to you to see if the surplus is justified and reasonable.

For excursions or to travel long distances, especially to reach some cities on the King's Road where public transport is almost non-existent, you can use the car rental or a private taxi.
If you opt for the latter, the race is not so expensive to many and saves valuable time (it avoids long hours waiting for a minibus to fill).
If you doubt your bargaining power for the price of the race, ask your hotel, some offer a list of fixed-rate transfers, often interesting; however, compare the offers of several hotels, the differences can be significant, especially in Madaba or Petra.

Bus and minibus

All cities are served by buses and / or minibuses. The difference between the two is not just a question of places. The buses have fixed schedules (quite well respected for the Jett company that connects Amman daily to Petra and Aqaba), while the minibuses are irregular, because, like taxis "services", they leave only once full. Minibuses are generally cheaper, but the space is very small and they are really not practical with big luggage.

Stop

Current means of transport in Jordan and yet officially prohibited. The driver may be fined more or less if he is stopped by the police. Despite the risk, there will always be a car for you to embark. But participation in the costs will often be required (except for very short journeys).

Plane

A single domestic airline connects Amman to Aqaba twice a day. Journey that is especially worth for its magnificent view. The price is very competitive. The ticket is even cheaper if you came from Europe on Royal Jordanian and if you thought to book this last section at the same time as the international flight.

Car rental

There are cars with or without driver and of all categories from local or international companies in Amman and Aqaba (book in advance). The national license is sufficient. Only condition: be over 21 years old.

Count around 25-35 JD per day for a category A car depending on the season, unlimited mileage, 35-45 JD for a category B, more for a category C or D. For a car with driver, count around 80-100 JD per day, gas and tip not included. By sharing with others, we are a winner ... and gas is less expensive than at home.

Whatever the company, always check the condition of the tires and the basic equipment (jack, etc.).

Regarding small rental companies, consider more carefully: defective battery (good test: the horn), tubes without valve cap, smooth tires, windows that can not be wound up, etc. Finally, one can take a car to Amman and leave it to Aqaba against a substantial commission (drop-off charge, 50-60 JD depending on the companies). Avoid too small renters, who are sometimes reluctant to return the deposit.

Road sign

Correct (provided you have a good sense of direction). In Arabic and English in Amman, where it is difficult to find your way in the beginning anyway. In tourist areas, you will find someone who speaks English and who can refer you. Outside, the locals will gladly help you, but they rarely speak a foreign language. Tourist sites are usually signposted (in English).

Conduct

We drive right, despite the country's British past. Speed limited to 100 km / h on motorways, 80 km / h on roads and 50 km / h in city. But you will see that the driving in Jordan is rather sporty and the code of the road quite little respected. That said, recently radars have appeared and are very numerous (usually in a patrol car parked on the right side of the road). Stay cautious on the Desert Highway, where the trucks (many) often roll like crazy ... Avoid going out tracks in the desert: we get lost and we get bogged down quickly. The safety belt is in principle obligatory
