Suggested routes Jordan
The vast majority of points of interest
lie along a 400-kilometer stretch of western fringe. We could have quickly done
the trick. But by its history and its geography, this little country conceals a
lot of richnesses archeological as well as natural: in a week, one discovers
the essential thing, in two one savor it at its rhythm with, as a bonus, some
detours of choice.
A week in Jordan
The King's Road: The airport being
equidistant from Amman and Madaba, we head straight south to the quiet city of
Madaba to visit the Church of St. George and the mosaic of Palestine;
archaeological park and Mount Nebo; then drive to wadi Mujib, Karak, and
especially the Dana Reserve. A long and busy day. Start early in the morning.
Petra: visit of the site and the Khazneh,
the most famous monument of Petra; the high place of sacrifice; the lower city;
the royal tombs and the magnificent stroll to the monastery. Count 2 days to
discover the main monuments of the site; and again, to make the most of the
light without suffering too much heat in the season, start the day at dawn.
The wadi Ram: excursion in the desert by
4x4, on foot or by camel with sunset on the glowing rocks and night in bivouac.
Go back to Amman by the Dead Sea and its
beaches with, in passing, a splash in weightlessness in the salt lake.
According to the time, to finish by Bethany, place of the baptism of Christ
(closing of the wickets with 15h in winter, 17h in summer).
We end with Amman, which we can spend 1
day visiting the citadel, the Jordan Museum, the Roman Theater and the
Automobile Museum.
Ten days in Jordan
Amman: start with the capital (see
suggestions in the one-week itinerary) before going back to the north of the
country.
The surroundings of Amman: in 2 days, one
can first visit the magnificent Greek-Roman ruins of Jerash, to couple with the
cross castle of Ajlun, or even further north, with Umm-Qays, a village Ottoman
nineteenth century, which adjoins the ancient city of Gadara, another beautiful
site of the country, more unknown; the next day can be devoted to the desert
castles, including the charming Qasr Amra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The King's route goes to Karak, Dana and
Petra and stops before reaching Wadi Ram: the same route as in the one-week
program.
Aqaba: well deserved rest with 2 days of
relaxation, snorkelling and scuba diving.
Return to Madaba by the Dead Sea and
Bethany (weather permitting) before flying back.
Two weeks in Jordan
Amman: staying 2 days in the capital, we
enjoy the best restaurants in the country and, apart from the sites to be
discovered in the itinerary of a week, this leaves time to linger in Rainbow
Street, hyper hyper street, just above the lower town, but also to visit, for
example, an exhibition of contemporary art in the neighborhood of jabal
Weibdeh.
The surroundings of Amman: 3 days will
not be too much to travel the north and east of the country, starting with
Jerash, Ajlun and Umm-Qays by staying in one of these cities; return by Salt
which houses the largest group of Ottoman mansions in Jordan. Venture, finally,
towards the east and the castles of the desert.
The King's Road: another 3 days to go
down the road at his own pace and see the maximum. Madaba and the loop circuit
on the shores of the Dead Sea (Mount Nebo, Bethany, Dead Sea Panoramic Complex);
the next day departure to Hammamat Ma'in (bathing in hot springs), Machéronte,
Umm-er-Rasas, which houses exceptional mosaics classified as World Heritage by
Unesco; Wadi Mujib is raided before arriving at Karak, the castle of the
Crusaders; and Dana for a night, or even a day trip to the beautiful nature
reserve; then visit Shawbak Castle before reaching Petra.
Petra: add to the tours already proposed
on 2 days (see previous routes) a day trip to Mount Aaron, the highest peak of
Petra, where is buried the brother of Moses. Magnificent view.
