south korea presentation
Introduction
South Korea is located in northeastern
Asia. The country can be visualized as an island because it is surrounded by
the China Sea to the East, South and West. Its only land border is in the North
and is represented by a zone called "demilitarized" (DMZ), completely
closed. Beyond this zone is North Korea, a country completely closed to the
outside world, with which South Korea has been at war since 1950. Since the end
of the fighting, South Korea has developed considerably under the influence of
the United States, very present in the country.
The country is populated by 49 million
inhabitants for an area of 99,274 km². Korea is
divided into nine provinces and its capital is Seoul, which is populated by 20
million people. As far as religion is concerned, Buddhism is the majority,
followed by Christianity and Confucianism. A large part of the population does
not have a religion. The official language is Korean. The spoken language is
Korean and the currency is the won. Its HDI is 0.9 (12th in the world)
economic and financial:
The economic risks in South Korea are
rather low. The GDP per capita is $ 21562. GDP growth has slowed down
considerably between 2010 (6.3%) and 2012 (2%) and is now stable with an
increase of 2.5% for 2013. The annual inflation rate is stable also with an
increase of 3.2% (2013). The budget balance represents 2.4% of GDP while the
current balance represents 1.7%. The share of the public debt falls slightly to
29.7%. As for the exchange rate, it has tended to increase since 1965 (US $ 1 =
3.6 won) until today (in 2012, US $ 1 = 1126 won).
Korea thus has many economic benefits
thanks to several factors. Its educational system is very efficient, and its
investments in Asian country workshops are increasing. The country has a very
diversified industrial base and is the world leader in the market of quality
electronics. On the other hand, it is more and more competing with China in certain
sectors such as iron and steel and textiles.
geographical and environmental:
Seismic risks are quite common in the
south-west of the country, but their impacts remain moderate. Typhoons can be
observed with high winds and floods, but the latter are occasional.
Conclusion
STRENGTHS
- Developed country with a successful
education
- Advanced technology
WEAKNESS
- Highly indebted public enterprises
- Ageing Population
- Gaps of important wealth
OPPORTUNITY
- ASEAN
- Opening of international markets
THREAT
- Intense competition
- Unpredictable threat from North Korea.
South Korea is a country that continues
to grow between its two big neighbors, China and Japan. The country will have
to face several important issues in the future. For example, like many
developed Asian countries, the Korean population is aging and the gap between
the richest and poorest is growing.
So the government will have to continue
working to try to contain these social gaps that create significant social
tension. He will also resume talks of "peace" with North Korea that
have been broken since Kim-Jung-Un succeeded his father as head of the
communist regime. In the end, Korea will have to continue investing in Asian
and African countries to expand its influence and keep its supply of raw
materials in check.
