The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is located
north of the Korean peninsula in eastern East Asia. It is a country whose
regime is based on the Juche doctrine and the Songun politics that set up the
two pillars of the state: Korea's Labor Party and the army. It is the only
communist dynasty in the world, with power handed down from father to son. The
founder of the Kim Il Sun regime was declared "eternal president" by
the constitution, when his son, Kim Jong Il succeeded him after his death.
Today is the grandson of Kim Il Sun, Kim Jong Un who is at the head of the
state, through the title of chairman of the National Defense Committee. As the
most closed country in the world, it is given the nickname "Kingdom
Hermit", the figures are difficult to find and especially hard to verify.
This is why it is necessary to understand that the figures revealed in the
subject will be approximate and to deal with hindsight. The population is
estimated at about 24.5 million people all of Korean origin. The official language
is Korean and the currency won (1 € equals approximately
1200 won). No official data on the Human Development
Index, but it would be among the ten lowest in the world, the country itself
being considered one of the poorest in the world. However to note a literacy
rate of 99% of the population over the age of fifteen.
economic and financial
Juche policy is based on self-sufficiency and
independence of the country. Thus in economic matters, the key word is
"autarky". This results in a catastrophic wealth with a GDP per
capita of about $ 1,800 in 2011, which places the country among the ten poorest
in the world according to the UN. For comparison, GDP / capita in South Korea
is $ 32,000 at the same time.
The Bank of South Korea estimates North Korea's GDP at
around $ 40 billion, with growth of 1.3% in 2012. Pyongyang's debt is valued at
$ 20 billion, and it has stopped any reimbursement since the 1980s, which
prevents its recourse to international credit. The country is experiencing a
chronic deficit in the trade balance, with, in 2012,
$ 5 billion in imports, compared with 3.35 million
exported goods. Chronic because it can not cope with the basic needs of its
population and a large part of its food, such as rice, are imported from China
or come from aid granted by other states, in exchange for diplomatic
agreements, for example .
In the agricultural sector, only 17% of the land is
arable and half as much as South Korea because of their poverty, lack of
fertilizer, agronomic skills and motorized equipment. "This is a strange
country where, on the one hand, farmers live almost in the Middle Ages and on
the other, engineers design long-range rockets," observes a European
diplomat based in Pyongyang.
In
terms of trade, China is the main trading partner with 80% of trade ($ 6
billion in 2011), followed by South Korea, Japan and Russia. China is also the
largest investor in the country, with nearly 140 Chinese companies present. The
Chinese are hungry for rare metals. And the DPRK is not lacking: the South Korean
mining group Korea Resources estimates to 6,000 billion dollars the value of
the deposits.
In terms of trade with France, French exports amounted
to € 2.25 million and imports to € 5.2 million in 2010. According to a French
diplomatic source, "only the Lafarge group is present: it was indirectly
the owner of 30 % of a North Korean cement plant employing 3,000 people, after
buying the cement division of the Egyptian group Orascom ".
However, economic reforms were launched in 2002 and
2009, but remain extremely limited. Kim Jong Un announced in January 2012 to
improve the economy by introducing elements of capitalism inspired by the
Chinese economic model. Since 2004, the Kaesong Economic Zone has been the
basis for inter-Korean economic cooperation. In fact, 123 South Korean
companies are based there and employ 53,000 North Korean workers. Both parties
find it interesting. For the south, it is access to a workforce half the price
in China with a salary of $ 60 per month for 48 hours of work per week. For the
north it is a vital source of foreign exchange. The country has raised more
than $ 2 billion since the opening of this industrial area. It has recently
been closed unilaterally by the north due to high tensions in the peninsula,
after a third North Korean nuclear test. It has been a shortfall for both
countries, although the consequences are greater in the DPRK, which is home to
more than 50,000 people. The country has no interest in closing this site
especially since it is the only point of contact between the two populations,
and no doubt that an ounce of uprising on the part of the North Korean in
contact with the southerners, would dangerously shake the diet.
The country is therefore mostly agricultural, with a
few rare manufacturing industries (we can note the presence of a car
manufacturer, Pyonghwa Motors), as garment making. There is a real parallel
industry in the clothing industry in this country. We have seen wages are twice
as low as those of the Chinese. As a result, some European companies have their
clothes made in North Korea, repatriate them to China and have them labeled
"Made in China" for example.
So we see that this country is in a state of certain
impoverishment, with a standard of living for the population, among the lowest
in the world. This is due to the policy of imprisonment and self-sufficiency
set up by the regime for nearly 60 years. The country is regularly hit by
famines due to food shortages and chronic weather events in this region. In the
mid-1990s, nearly a million people died because of hardships.
In conclusion, here is a satellite shot of the Korean
peninsula seen at night. It perfectly illustrates the developmental divide
between the two Koreas, and the failure of the North Korean model. The only
bright spot in the north is the capital Pyongyang, the rest being dark. True
contrast with the capital of the south, Seoul and the rest of the country.
Light marks the activity concentrations of a geographical area and here we
clearly see that the north appears as "dead".
geographical and environmental
The country is divided between lowlands to the south
and more mountainous areas in the north. In winter the climate is almost
Siberian with temperatures that can drop to -20 degrees Celsius. Summer can be
dry, however, with temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius. On average over a
year, the weather is rather temperate but with strong peaks. In addition, the
region is regularly hit by typhoons and other violent monsoons. This has the
effect of destroying the already meager potential harvests. This caused the famine
mentioned earlier, which accelerated international food aid. The seismic risk
is lower than in Japan for example but there is always a risk because we are at
the crossroads of different tectonic plates. Regarding pollution, it is very
low, especially concerning the release of Co2 in the atmosphere, the heavy
industry being almost non-existent and the population having, moreover, not the
right, nor the means to own a vehicle. We are talking here about the pollution
emitted by the country, but it would not be surprising if measurements of CO2
concentration in the country are very high, given its geographical proximity to
China.
At the level of diseases, the danger can come from
mosquito bites that can transmit a benign form of malaria, especially in the
south of the country. In common with most developing or underdeveloped
countries, water is a vector of disease and diarrheal problems are common. It
should be noted that at the end of 2006, a measles epidemic killed 4 people and
nearly 3,000 infected people. Finally, officially, the AIDS virus would not be
present in North Korea, made unverifiable, because no data could be published
on the subject.
Except for the climate that can be extreme in the
winter and some small sporadic and contained epidemics, the environmental and
health risks are not higher on average than elsewhere on the planet.
