Introduction
Belgium's capital is Brussels. In
Brussels is also the headquarters of the European Commission.
This country has about 11 million
inhabitants.
Its density is 364 inhabitants per square
kilometer and it has an area of about 30 thousand square kilometers.
The languages spoken are French, Dutch and German.
The current monarch is Philippe de
Belgique.
From a geopolitical point of view,
Belgium represents a complexity around which our work is articulated. We will
see that there are two main regions / communities that make up a rather
artificial set composed of linguistic, cultural and economic differences. Which
leads us to ask the following question: Belgium, towards the break-up?
Part I: History of Belgium
It is a regime of parliamentary monarchy,
endowed with federal institutions, superimposed on regional and community
institutions.
This federalism, is originally designed
to guarantee at the same time flexibility and cohesion of Belgium.
Indeed, among the remaining powers of the
Belgian State include justice, finance, law enforcement, defense, foreign
policy, and especially employment and social security. The distribution of
power is made between three autonomous entities, which are the federal state,
then the communities and the regions.
Presentation
Brussels is one of the three autonomous
regions. As capital, it symbolizes European unification.
It is a predominantly French-speaking but
officially bilingual region and acts as a referee between the inhabitants of
the Flemish and Walloon communities.
Indeed, Brussels is located in the
Flemish region but is mainly composed of Francophone (95%) and 85,000 Belgian
Dutch speakers, only 8% of the total population of Brussels and 7% of the total
population having Dutch as their language of choice. exclusive use.
Conclusion
A single monarch heads the Flemish and
Walloon regions. It is not excluded that the crown is the only element that
holds the country from bursting. A remarkable role in this area was played by
King Albert, who for many years played the role of referee.
However, if Flanders reaches its
independence, it is unlikely that Wallonia can survive as a separate state.
Nationalist movements are very active in
Flanders and almost nonexistent in Wallonia, in case of breakup of Belgium we
can assume that Wallonia could be attached to another country, for example
France (this is a possible scenario). The independence of a single Belgian
region could lead to a collapse of the federal state and a reconfiguration of the
European space.
