Transportation and Travel Iran
How to go to Iran
Given the current geopolitical situation, it is better to
avoid traveling to Iran from a border country. Border areas are particularly
dangerous. Let's not forget that Iran is bordering countries at war like
Afghanistan and Iraq ... But the shared borders with Pakistan and Turkey are
not more recommended.
Better to fly to Iran. Air France and Iran Air connect
Paris-CDG and Tehran operates non-stop. Many companies serve Tehran, European
companies such as Alitalia, Lufthansa or KLM as well as Gulf companies such as
Gulf Air, Qatar Airways or Emirates, or Turkish airlines Pegasus or Turkish
Airlines.
Some travelers travel to Iran from Uzbekistan to extend a
cultural stay on the theme of the Silk Road, however it is not recommended to
travel with Central Asian companies, often equipped with Tupolev.
To move in Iran
The extremely low price of petrol makes road and air
transport very attractive.
By plane
There is a good network of aerial laisons. From Tehran, one
can easily reach the cities that are worth visiting such as Isfahan (Esfahan),
Shiraz, Mashad or Bandar-e Abbas.
Be careful about the choice of companies and devices. It is
recommended to favor the national airline, Iran Air, or Mahan Air, known for
its punctuality.
By bus
The bus companies serve the whole country. There are about
twenty (Peima Iran, Peike Saba, Royal Safar VIP, Hamsafar, RAJA, Seir o Safar
...).
Prices are particularly competitive. The buses are
comfortable and the main roads as well. The buses are divided into two
categories: Volvo and Mercedes. The first are more comfortable and faster, the
small difference in price is well worth this gain.
The buses are very comfortable, with real reclining seats.
"VIPs" are the cream. For long trips, a small cold drink and a packed
lunch are systematically included in the service.
For a one-way trip Tehran-Isfahan, count 6am, for Shiraz
7:30, for Tabriz 9am, and for Yazd 6h. In Tehran, departures are either at
Tehran Railstation, Tehran Beihaghi Terminal or Argantin Terminal. You can take
your tickets in advance, especially if you are traveling in high season.
Few signs indicate the buses, but the touts loudly proclaim
the destinations: have them check that you are taking the right vehicle. Do not
hesitate to ask other travelers to help you, the Iranians are very helpful.
There are also minibuses, less comfortable, but convenient
enough for short trips.
Bus stations in provincial towns are often out of the way,
take a taxi or a shared taxi to get to your hotel.
By train
There is also a good rail network, and all trains pass
through Tehran. This is the preferred solution for night journeys: a sleeper
train will be more comfortable than a bus.
First class tickets are more expensive than the bus, but
train travel is always particularly enjoyable. Choose preferably the first
class with sleeping compartments for 4 or 6 people. For women traveling alone,
single-sex compartments are recommended.
The train ride between the capital, Tehran, and the holy
city of Mashad is very popular. There is even a higher class train, the
Simorgh, with dinner and breakfast included.
The legislation concerning
cigarettes is not the same, do not forget to ask for a non-smoking car if you
do not want to be inconvenienced.
Inter-urban transport
Group Taxis: Savari or Paykan
The savari are collective taxis a little outdated, commonly
called Paykan, in reference to the brand, crisscross the cities. Do not forget
to set the price in advance, and know that they often speak in tomans.
Private taxis
There are taxis agency or "telefon taxi" as say
the Iranians, because they are ordered by phone. More expensive but
comfortable, they can be ordered with the help of the hotel reception or a
restaurant.
Although the roads are in very good condition, know that
road accidents are common, the respect of the rules of the road does not fit in
the DNA of the Iranian drivers, it is rather "push-de-you -which I put
myself in.
Be careful.
Metro
Tehran has a clean and cheap metro. A quick and convenient
solution, because it takes sometimes more than one hour to cross the capital by
car as it is bottled. The Mehrabad airport is connected (with a change by tram)
as well as the big bazaar south of the city, behind which is the main bus
station.
There are also subway lines in Isfahan (work was done on
the lines) and in Mashad.
There are compartments reserved for women.
