The Kuwait Towers are three reinforced concrete towers
located in Kuwait, the capital of the homonymous country.
Description
The main tower measures 187 meters high and is composed of a
restaurant and a water tower. There is also a sphere of observation that rises
to 123 meters above sea level and performs a complete rotation every 30
minutes. The second tower, 145.8 meters high, also serves as a water tower. The
third tower houses the equipment to control the flow of electricity and
illuminates the two largest towers. The towers can hold 4,500 cubic meters of
water.
They were designed by Sune Lindström and Malene Björn and
were built by Energoprojekt, a company from Belgrade in Yugoslavia. They were
opened to the public in March 1979. The towers were heavily damaged by the
Iraqis during their occupation of Kuwait from 1990 to 1991 and were renovated
in 1992 after the liberation of the country.
Design and construction
The main tower is about 187 meters high and has two spheres.
The inferior sphere has in its inferior part of a water tank of 4,500 cubic
meters and in its upper half a restaurant for 90 people, a cafeteria, a hall
and a reception room. The upper sphere, which rises to 123 meters above sea
level and completes one complete round every 30 minutes, has a cafeteria. The
second tower is 147 meters high and serves as a water tank. The third tower
houses equipment to illuminate the two large towers. The towers have 9,000
cubic meters of water in full.3 4 5 Although there are three towers, the
structure is often referred to as the Kuwait Tower in the singular.
The Kuwait Towers were designed by the Danish architect
Malene Bjørn as part of a water distribution project run by the Swedish
engineering company VBB (renamed Sweco in 1997). The chief architect of Sune
Lindström's company erected five groups of its typical mushroom water towers,
the Kuwait Water Towers, but the Kuwaiti emir, Sheikh Yaber Al-Ahmad, wanted a
more attractive design for the sixth site. Of the ten different designs, three
were presented to the Emir, who chose the design.
The Kuwait Towers project was made by VBB, who contracted the
construction for Energoprojekt in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.9 The towers were
constructed of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete. Construction was
carried out from 1971 to 1976 and the main tower was opened to the public on
March 1, 1979.10
Approximately 41,000 enameled steel discs span the three
spheres in eight shades of blue, green and gray, reminiscent of the tile domes
of historic mosques. The disks are arranged in spiral patterns around the
spheres. According to the architect, the group of towers refers to the ideals
of humanity and technology, symbolized by the balloon and the rocket.11 The
Kuwait Towers were, along with the Kuwait Water Towers, During the first Gulf
War of 1990 and 1991, the towers were damaged, as Saddam Hussein intended to
demolish them. Fortunately, only minor structural damage was done.
