WHERE AM I SAFE?

The safest places to protect yourself from lightning strikes are :

• in a building, away from windows ;

• in a car whose body and roof are made of metal (not a convertible), and where all the metal parts are interconnected. It will then function as a Faraday cage. Keep all doors and windows closed. When lightning strikes, you will hardly notice it - unless there is a very strong shock that could damage electronic instruments.

B) GOOD TO KNOW

• Taller people or objects nearby are more likely to be struck by lightning. So you run more risks if you are in an open area. In this case, try to find shelter and,

• N ' will not shelter under a tent. A metal caravan is a good protection. Close windows and doors and unplug all electrical appliances.

• Stay away from trees, standing lanterns, towers and power lines. This also applies to metal objects such as tent poles, bicycles or fishing rods. Stay at least 3 meters from wire fences and fences.

• If you are in a forest, look for a small group of low trees in the lower part of the land. Never go to shelter under an isolated tree!

• Never use an umbrella.

WHAT IF I AM COMFORTABLY SEATED INSIDE?

It is also necessary to take precautions indoors, where the danger may be real.

• Remove all plugs from electrical appliances from the sockets. Disconnect the telephone plug from your computer. Also remove the plug from your waterbed and electric blankets.

• Close doors and windows.

• Stay away from windows. The light given off by a flash can be very intense and, if it is very close, it can blind you.

• Stay away from sources of running water in the house. Above all, do not shower. • Stay away from pipes or metal objects (water pipes, electrical circuits, gas pipes, telephone lines, cable television, radiators ...) • Do not stand near a fireplace or an open fire . • Do not use your sun bench. • Do not call a landline.
