Jordan is a West Asian state located in
the Middle East. Its political nature is a constitutional monarchy with a
parliamentary regime. The Head of State is currently King Abdullah II, while
the head of government is Abd Allah Ensour.
The state of Jordan, or Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is organized into 12 administrative divisions called governorates.
Its capital is Amman. The country has an area of 12000 km2. The official language is Arabic and the currency in
circulation is the Jordanian Dinar (JD).
Jordan was listed in 2012 as having
5,951,000 inhabitants. The density of the country is 66.6 inhabitants per
square kilometer, for an HDI of 0.677. The majority of the population consists
of Sunni Muslims (92%) against a minority (6%) of Christians. This complexity
is reinforced by the multiple ethnicity of Jordan consisting mainly of
Palestinians and historically Jordanian tribes. The largely urbanized people of
Jordan (78.5%) are globally literate, with a rate of up to 91%. The
representation of women in the country's institutions can be observed through
the rate of women in parliament, which is equal to 12.2%.
