The
ethnic Jordanians, largely associated with the tribes, support the current
monarchy. The majority of the Jordanian population, however, is of Palestinian
origin, since the West Bank has a very close historical link with Jordan.
External
conflicts and neighboring countries potential risk:
Jordan
is geographically limited to the West by Israel, to the South East by Saudi
Arabia, to the East by Iraq and to the North by Syria. Jordan is thus located
in a region of increased instability, at the political, security, humanitarian
and military levels. Close conflicts and a complicated strategic position make
Jordan a risk area.
The
deep-seated Israeli-Palestinian conflict poses permanent threats to Jordan,
especially because of Jordan's close relationship with the Palestinian
territory. The current and violent crisis in Syria greatly increases this
security risk. Recent foreign interventions in Iraq and the subsequent lack of
stability must not be neglected. Jordan faces a large influx of Palestinian,
Iraqi and Syrian refugees that threatens its identity and stability.
Jordan
is in a way a "buffer" state in the zone, which must absorb tensions
from all sides and moderate its position constantly to mitigate these security
threats.
Security
conditions via crime and terrorism:
According
to the Jordanian authorities, there is an increased risk of terrorist attacks.
Jordan was the victim of terrorist attacks, particularly in November 2005.
"Given the regional context, security remains a major concern in Jordan,
especially since the November terrorist attacks. It is committed to
international cooperation in the fight against terrorism: the amended criminal
law increases the penalties for acts of terrorism and a law on
counter-terrorism was adopted. Measures to strengthen the fight against the
financing of organized crime are under consideration, as well as a law against
money laundering. According to the European Union's partnership report with
Jordan on the subject.
The
fight against terrorism in Jordan is closely linked to the fight against
political and religious radicalism. Jordan has also accepted several
partnerships with the European Union in this direction.
