Sudan
is one of the largest countries in Africa. It is mainly made up of plains and
plateaus with some mountains, especially in Darfur, in the south and in the
east. The Blue and White Nile meet in the capital Khartoum. Its subsoil holds
raw materials: precious metals such as gold and silver, oil and vast aquifers.
The official language is Arabic. The Sudanese are predominantly Muslim, with
some Christian and animist homes.
The
population is mainly rural (66%) and sometimes nomadic (7%). Rural populations
live in small communities and most of them subsist in agriculture and extensive
livestock farming in an often precarious environment. Poverty and illiteracy
remain there. The extent of the country makes it difficult to develop a
transport network. There are some major railway lines connecting major cities
to Khartoum as well as paved roads, but most roads are bad. Transportation of
raw materials, electricity or people is difficult in many remote areas such as
Darfur.
Sudan's
GDP was $ 73.8 billion in 2014. After years of strong economic growth (10% per
annum) in the mid-2000s, the partition with South Sudan, where 75% of the
country's reserves are located. oil, stopped this growth cycle. The country
exports only about 100 000 barrels a day, whereas this amount was previously
500 000. Its public debt also reached 78% of the GDP in 2014. At the same time,
it had to face a high inflation ( peak of 47% in annual trend during 2014), now
reduced to 13% per year.
Although
agriculture accounts for only 29% of GDP, this sector employs 80% of the
assets. The country produces mainly sorghum, wheat, millet, vegetables,
peanuts, sugar cane and cotton. It also has a large herd of cattle, sheep and
goats of the order of 100 million heads. The industrial sector consists mainly
of processing of agricultural products and refining of oil.
The
country's trade balance is heavily deficit. The country buys mostly
manufactured goods, equipment, textiles and chemicals from China, India and the
countries of the Arabian Peninsula. It exports petroleum products to Asia,
cotton, groundnuts, livestock to Saudi Arabia mainly and to other Arab
countries. Although Sudan is a major agricultural producer, it remains a net
importer of food products.
