Transportation and travel Yemen

Remember that it is currently not advisable to travel to Yemen, and, in any case, not recommended to travel alone on the roads, without escort or driver.

It is theoretically possible to rent a car without a driver, but in any case, renting is almost as expensive as a car with a driver. Then, unless you really know the country and the Arabic language, you would have a hard time finding your way (very few road directions).

The car with driver

This is the ideal solution for several reasons: simplified formalities (the agency deals with authorizations), saving time, security, freedom of action (departures, arrivals, stops, detours ...). If the driver is cooperative (this is often the case), he will make you discoveries that you would not have made alone.

The daily fee requested generally includes gasoline, and the driver's pay. The meal and the accommodation of the driver are not included, but you can always offer him a little something. As an indication, renting a 4x4, with a driver and gasoline included, costs between 50 and 100 US $ per day.

Check the condition of the car before leaving.

Between major cities, roads are asphalted, while secondary roads are often unmarked tracks (4x4 required).

To cross the rub (desert) Al-Khali by car, you will not be able to do without the services of the Bedouins. Counting, in addition to the driver, about 150 to 300 US $ per crossing, regardless of the number of people and (in principle) vehicles, which some agencies are careful not to say, taxing each vehicle convoy. It's at home and it's like that ... Same for Shaharan: it's the Bedouins who decide.

In general, it is strongly discouraged to take the car at night.

The bus

If it is quite possible to use public transport, it is important to know that they only use roads that serve important cities: Sanaa, Mareb, Hodeida, Hajja, Aden, Mukalla and a few others. inquire at the Sanaa tourist office, near the main post office). However, even if the road network improves from year to year, many sites and villages are only accessible by 4x4, and that's good!

They are regular and the places are numbered. Their rates are ridiculous. Better to reserve the day before. Tickets are bought at the bus stations; it is impossible to buy on the bus.

In addition to local buses, which are sometimes miles away from Western comfort requirements, a company, Yemit Co, offers modern, air-conditioned Mercedes coaches on the same routes. A bit more expensive, but equipped with sleeper seats. Not insignificant, given the length of the trips.

Collective taxis

They leave special stations "taxis". The least we can say is that they are the best way to meet Yemenis. These old vehicles leave when they consider themselves full, with a particular notion of "full".

It is the most economical means of transport after the stop and the walk, if one does not suffer from claustrophobia and that one does not fear the "sporty" driving of the drivers always in a hurry (like the passengers ...) . Moreover, some drivers are reluctant to ship tourists who, subject to police checks, may delay.

Depending on the route taken, taxis have bands of different colors.

We negotiate the price before departure. Collective taxis have fixed fares, as do coaches.

Hitchhiking
Possible on the main roads, very random on the tracks and secondary roads. The trucks will take you without difficulty, but the drivers, not being philanthropists, will normally ask you a remuneration of the same amount as the collective taxi providing the same connection.
Yemenis pay according to this system. However, we can haggle. Ask about the price before to discuss. It also happens that drivers do not ask money from strangers.
The plane
If you are alone and in a hurry, you will not escape. Practical, but quite expensive for long trips to Hadramaout (it does not replace the crossing of the desert by 4x4, but saves two days, finally ... if the plane takes off).
Yemenia Airways provides the majority of domestic connections and sometimes offers discounts if you have traveled home for the international flight. Inquire before buying your ticket.
Walking
This is probably ideal for a backpacker, but walking takes a lot of time. In Yemen, it requires a good physical condition because of changes in altitude and climate, and a lot of patience because hitchhiking (see above) is not a common practice.

The trek is also a goal in itself, programmed by many major travel agencies.
