Health and safety Yemen
Remember that it is currently not advisable to
travel to Yemen, because of the very high risk of kidnappings and attacks
against foreign nationals.
Health
immunizations
No mandatory vaccinations for travelers from
Europe. On the other hand, it is recommended to be up to date with its
"universal" vaccines (DTCP, hepatitis B), especially its polio
vaccine: Yemen is currently experiencing an epidemic. Vaccination against
diseases related to lack of food hygiene (hepatitis A and typhoid fever), and
possibly those against meningitis and rabies is also recommended.
For stays of more than one month, a certificate
of non-seropositivity is required.
Malaria and mosquitoes
Yemen is classified in zone 2. Malaria is
present everywhere in Yemen, especially on the coast, especially between
September and the end of February. Aden is unscathed.
It is therefore essential to follow an
antimalarial treatment, to be coated with effective anti-mosquito repellent
(Insect Screen type or Five out of Five), and to impregnate the tissues
(mosquito nets in particular). Insecticide-treated mosquito nets are the first
protection against mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit.
In all cases, wear at dusk clothes covering the
maximum body surface and coat the exposed parts of the body every 4 hours
maximum.
coronavirus
Several countries in the Arabian Peninsula,
including Yemen, have been identified as potentially at risk. Classical hygiene
measures are therefore recommended, and contact with animals is to be avoided.
Fragile or elderly people should consult their doctor before considering a trip
to Yemen.
Cholera and poliomyelitis
In 2017, cholera and polio outbreaks are raging
in Yemen. To prevent cholera, it is recommended to wash your hands regularly,
to consume only bottled water, to peel fruits and vegetables and to eat cooked
food.
Everyday life
Avoid drinking tap water or water that you are
served in a carafe at the restaurant. Fragile stomachs can react badly. Prefer
to buy capsulated bottles. Beware of salads, especially in summer.
For the medical kit, provide sunscreen, hat,
glasses and water bottle, if you come in summer; a small moisturizing and
curative cream against skin irritations; an intestinal antiseptic (Ercefuryl)
and a transit retarder (Imodium), against difficult digestion (or too fast);
aspirin or paracetamol against small ailments and vitamin C against barbags.
security
General situation
Due to the very high risk of abductions and
attacks against foreign nationals, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally
advises against any trip to Yemen, including on the island of Socotra.
The current context is extremely worrying for
French nationals visiting the country. Those already on site are invited to
leave Yemen as soon as possible. The French Embassy in Sanaa is closed until
further notice.
Abductions of foreigners
In Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the
world, armed tribes resort to the kidnapping of foreigners (tourists or
expatriates) to obtain subsidies and infrastructure.
When the security conditions permit a trip, the
risks are limited with a travel agency, because it guarantees a maximum of
professionalism and security. A local French agency will provide you with the
maximum information.
circulation
A driver for an agency is not alone, but
supported by an infrastructure and a relational system that can be valuable ...
For the Marib region, an escort is planned from the checkpoint located between
Sanaa and Marib . The crossing of the desert from Marib is always allowed. Even
if it is possible to make the trip alone by renting a car with driver, it is
advisable, once again, to go through an agency that will organize transport in
convoy.
There are still many checkpoints between Aden
and Mukalla. Some backpackers may have lamented the corruption of some police
officers. Sometimes difficult to pass without leaving a bakchich.
To conclude, let's not forget that in most of
the country, people are welcoming. It will still be necessary to learn about
the issue of authorization to circulate in the country, knowing that certain
areas (borders with Saudi Arabia, military or oil perimeter, etc.) will still
be prohibited.
Piracy acts
Navigation along the Somali coast is rendered
very dangerous by acts of piracy. It is therefore formally discouraged.
Respect of customs
Yemenis admit that you do not have the same
customs as they do. However, do not exaggerate ... The respect of some rules of
etiquette will not only save you trouble, but will also greatly facilitate your
contacts with the people who ask only that.
Status of the woman
This is the big question mark and
"frustration" of the western visitor in Yemen. "Invisible"
for the male tourist, what about his place in the country? Vast question that
we will just try to address.
We already know that with the unification and
generalization of the rules of the North to the whole country, there is a
decline in acquired benefits, and a decline in the status of women. The laws
reinforce the practices of traditional society to the detriment of women's
emancipation ...
It must also be remembered that the migration
of men abroad (or to the city) has resulted in 70% of rural, only in a
patriarchal society, an "ambiguous" status, to which was added
additional work and responsibilities (despite improvements brought by modernization).
It should be noted that they constitute 51% of the electorate, and that in the
South they have taken an active part in the resistance and national liberation
movements.
Some women have taken up positions of
responsibility in the government. Others were elected deputies.
Traveling alone in Yemen
Traveling alone for a woman is a little
complicated. On the other hand, with a girlfriend, you can go almost anywhere
without fear. It can even become an advantage, because women in villages not
too touristy will perhaps invite you to take tea and share a moment.
A little considered as a "third sex",
the West can thus have access to the world of men and women. In the first,
however, be cautious: no overly supported looks that could be misinterpreted,
and a great reserve in physical contact. Avoid letting yourself get hooked
alone in a qat party-night with about fifteen mustaches. With a little common
sense, everything will be fine.
Always keep a scarf in your bag, in case it
would be quieter ... but you will rarely be "obliged" to wear it (see
"Clothing" section).
No problem if you share your room with someone
who does not have the same name as you. Concubinage, homosexuality,
camaraderie, the Yemenis will not ask you questions, and will act as if they
knew nothing.
