قصة اعصار جونو
Cyclone Gonu, named
Cyclone 02 A in 2007 by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, was the strongest
tropical cyclone recorded in the Arabian Sea and tied for the strongest cyclone
recorded in the northern Indian Ocean1. The second tropical cyclone of the 2007
cyclone season in the northern Indian Ocean, Gonu was born from a persistent
zone of convection in the eastern Arabian Sea on 1 June. Enjoying a favorable
high-level environment and high temperatures at the surface of the waters, it
intensified until reaching a maximum of 240 km / h on June 3, as reported by
the Indian meteorological service (IMD) . Gonu weakened after he fell on colder
waters and drier air, and on June 5 he reached the land on the easternmost tip
of Oman, becoming the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the Arabian Peninsula.
Intense cyclones
such as Gonu are extremely rare on the Arabian Sea, as most storms in the
region tend to be small and rapidly dissipated2. The name Gonu comes from the
list of names for the Northern Indian Ocean suggested by the Maldives. It means
"Bag made of palm leaves" in Divehi3.
The cyclone caused
nearly $ 4 million in damage (2007) and the death of 50 people in Oman, where
the cyclone was considered the worst natural disaster in the country. Gonu
caused heavy rain near the eastern coast, reaching 610 mm. These rains caused
flooding and heavy damage. In Iran, the cyclone caused 23 deaths and US $ 215
million in damages (2007).
Oman
Seven hours before
the arrival of Gonu on the northeastern tip of Oman, the great waves and heavy
rains began. The total rainfall reached 610 millimeters near the coast. The
waves and the storm surge flooded the coast of most of the country. Winds
overturned telephone lines and power poles throughout eastern Oman, damaging
buildings and infrastructure. The city of Sur and the village of Ras al-Hadd on
the eastern tip were particularly affected. In Muscat, the winds reached 100 km
/ h, leaving the capital of Oman without electricity, the waves flooded the
streets and some buildings. The police sent messages to the residents by e-mail
so they would avoid the streets so they would not be electrocuted because of
the fallen wires.
On the oilfield
side, there was little damage. The Sur port, which transshipped ten million
tons annually, was seriously damaged and temporarily shut down52.
According to the
Oman News Agency, the cyclone killed forty-nine people and twenty-seven were missing
in the country four days after the events. About 20,000 were affected54 and
material damage amounted to about US $ 4 billion, the worst natural disaster in
the country's history55.
United Arab Emirates
Waves of ten meters
swept the coast near Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, forcing the closure
of roads, including the road from Kalba to Fujairah. Civil security and police
supervised these closures and municipal workers put up pumps to rescue the
flood. A dozen fishing boats were destroyed and three boats were pushed into
the land or emptied of their equipment. The port of Fujairah suffered great
damage and a ship sank near the port with the ten passengers on board missing.
Iran
In Iran, there are
twenty-three deaths due to Gonu, including twenty drownings. The material
damage amounted to 2 billion Rials (2007) (US $ 216 million). Gonu caused
moderate to heavy rains, 74 mm in Chabahar. Winds of 111 km / h broke the grid
and sandstone houses, causing power losses and fires35,45. At least forty houses
have been flooded and several major roads have been cut46,35. The storm surge
was 2 meters in places flooding several houses along the coast37,59.
In Bandar-e-gas, the
river got out of bed, killing three people caught in the waves with their
vehicle. A dam in Nikshahr County was damaged by flooding as well.
