A fingerprint or typewriter is the result of the affixing of a finger on a support after inking of the latter. The pattern formed on the support consists of dermatoglyphs. Fingerprints are unique and characteristic of each individual; even real twins have different fingerprints.
The fingerprint constitutes a "digital trace", a term referring more generally to the result of a contact of a finger with a support, sufficiently smooth to remain marked thereon.
Methods of identifying individuals by their fingerprints without the aid of a computer are referred to as "typing" 1. The study of digital drawings is called "dactyloscopy" (from the Greek daktylos, "finger", and scopy, "examination"). The quasi-unique nature of a fingerprint makes it a biometric tool widely used for the identification of individuals in forensic pathology and forensic science.
Starting from traces or papillary fingerprints, automatic identification software allows in 2005 to identify from 80 to 120 characteristic points, and from 150 to 200 points in 2013. From palmar traces - traces of the palms of the hand - , the same software can detect 1,500 points in 2005 and 2,000 in 2013. Thus, an incomplete palmprint at nine-tenth is likely to be able to be exploited2.
By analogy, one speaks of voice imprint authenticated by techniques of recognition of the speaker
The different digital tracks
The digital trace can be:
• visible (or direct) - it is said to be "positive" when affixing material, and "negative" when removing material;
• latent (invisible to the naked eye) - the trace comes from the deposition of sweat (secretion of the sweat glands: 99% of water which, by evaporation, leaves in place salts and amino acids) and / or deposition of sebaceous secretions;
• molded - the trace comes from the contact of a finger with a malleable surface (wax, mastic ...).
The digital traces can be divided into three main types according to their motives:
• loops, right or left;
• whorls, also called whorls or whorls;
• arches, also called arches or tents.
These three types of traces correspond to 95% of human fingers: 60% have loops, 30% whorls and 5% arcs21. Each trace belongs to a classified type: adelte, bidelte, tridelte (rare). The monodelts are divided into subgroups: normal, external, composite. Similarly for the bidelts: with concentric whorls, with whorls in "z" ...
The patterns are differentiated between themselves by means of "singular points" on the loops, whorls or arcs:
• global singular points:
• nucleus or center: place of convergence of the streaks;
• delta: place of divergence of the streaks;

• local singular points (also called minutiae): points of irregularity on the papillary lines (endings, bifurcations, islands-equated to two endings, lakes).
