The Farasan Islands, in Arabic جزر فرسان, are an archipelago of Saudi Arabia bathed by Red lamer. The islands are coral.

Geography

The archipelago is located forty kilometers north-west of the city of Jizan, Saudi Arabia. It depends administratively on the province of Jizan.

The main islands are Farasan Island, Sadjid Island and Zoufaf Island. Flat and arid, they include dunes. The terrestrial fauna is particularly represented by gazelles, while in the sea, dugongs populate the mangroves and the coral reefs bathed by plankton-rich waters.

The town of Farasan presents some houses built of corals for merchants and sellers of pearls.

History

The discovery of two Latin inscriptions revealed the existence of a detachment of a Roman fleet and soldiers of the Roman army of the province of Egypt in the Farasan Islands during the reign of the emperor Antoninus Pius.

They have long been a place of exile for dissidents and criminals.
