A portable computer, or simply portable in Canada1, Belgium and Switzerland, is a computer with limited weight and dimensions for easy transport2. Laptops have several uses both personal and educational, and are sometimes used for backup of personal media storage. A laptop computer has the same types of components as a typical desktop computer, including a screen, speakers, and a physical keyboard. Since the years 2010, most additionally have an integrated webcam and a microphone preinstalled. A laptop is equipped with an accumulator, or battery, rechargeable by means of an outlet.
disadvantages
Some laptops, such as netbooks, tablets and ultraportables, have more limited performance than fixed computers (notably to consume less and have more autonomy).
In order to be as compact as possible, almost all the components of a laptop are optimized for a single computer, reducing the possibility of component upgrades and performance.

A laptop consists of:
• motherboard, read only memory, RAM, graphics card;
• often a DVD player and sometimes Blu-Ray, until the early 2000s sometimes also had a floppy drive;
• hard drive and / or flash memory (SSD), which saves energy and provides faster playback for smaller files but at a higher cost;
• flat screen (the first were equipped with a small diagonal CRT);
• keyboard (reduced, without a separate numeric keypad for computers with a screen smaller than 38 cm, ie 15 ");
• various standard connectors to complete their equipment externally (network, USB, eSata, ExpressCard, jack, etc.);
• tablet (touch pad) replacing the mouse and its buttons;
• Wi-Fi and sometimes Bluetooth connectivity;
• loudspeakers, a webcam and its microphone (the latter becoming generalized from the mid-2000s).
Categories
Transportable: heavier (between 4 and 7 kg), they carry more powerful components, in particular a high-performance graphics card and / or a high-end processor. This is permitted by the possibility of placing a cooling system at the height within the machine. They are not indicated in mobile use but rather represent large computers transportable from one home to another.
• Portable: screen about 38 cm, or 15 inches, which are about 2 to 3 kg. These are generally versatile models.
• Ultraportable: between 1 and 2 kg, they maintain good performances but are more expensive, especially because of the presence of expensive low power processors (CULV platform for example). They rarely have a DVD player.
• Netbooks: ultraportable, they are less fast, because of much less powerful processors like the Intel Atom or AMD Neo, which saves the battery. They are less vulnerable to shocks and sold at a much lower price. The size of the screen is often between 10 and 12 inches. They do not have a DVD player.
• Tablet PC (tablet PC): ultraportable with a touch screen, for example the Asus R2H marketed in 2007. Full article [archive] of 2008 on the TabletPC
• Gamers: laptops whose performance and graphics card are particularly suitable for video games.
Connecting to the Internet
Recent laptops (such as ultraportables) can be equipped or pre-equipped with a 3G or 3G + chip allowing a high-speed mobile connection. Otherwise, a laptop can be connected to the Internet via a USB key (3G or 3G +), a USB modem, Wi-Fi, a 3G internet card or via a mobile phone that can be connected to the internet. In the latter case, the phone acting as a 3G modem is connected to the computer (via a USB cable or a Bluetooth connection); it is generally necessary to download the software allowing this type of connection16.
