Liberty Enlightening The World),
better known as the Statue Of Liberty, is one of the most famous monuments of
the United States. This monumental statue is located in New York, on Liberty
Island, south of Manhattan, at the mouth of the Hudson River and near Ellis
Island.
It was built in France and offered by
the French people as a sign of friendship between the two nations to celebrate
the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue was
unveiled on October 28, 1886, in the presence of the President of the United
States, Grover Cleveland. The idea came from the jurist and professor at the
College de France Édouard de Laboulaye in 1865. The project was entrusted in
1871 to the French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. For the choice of brass to be
used for construction, the architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc had the idea of the technique of the repoussé. In 1879, on the
death of Viollet-le-Duc, Bartholdi appealed to the engineer Gustave Eiffel to
decide the internal structure of the statue. The latter imagined a metal pylon supporting the
copper plates hammered and fixed.
The statue has been part of the
National Historic Landmarks since October 15, 1924 and has been a UNESCO World
Heritage Site since 1984.
The statue of Liberty, in addition to
being a very important monument of the city of New York, has become one of the
symbols of the United States and represents in a more general way the freedom
and the emancipation vis-à-vis of oppression. From its inauguration in 1886 to
Jet Age3, the statue was the first vision of the United States for millions of
immigrants, after a long crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the main element
of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, which is managed by the National
Park Service. The creation of the Statue of Liberty takes place in the
tradition of the Colossus of Rhodes, some of which have undoubtedly been an
inspiration for Bartholdi
After the attacks of September 11,
2001, access was banned for security reasons: the pedestal reopened in 2004 and
the statue in 2009, with a limitation of the number of visitors allowed to
access the crown. The statue (including the pedestal and base) was closed for
one year until October 28, 2012, so that a secondary staircase and other
security features could be installed (access to the island is however remained
open). One day after the reopening, access was again banned because of the
devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. Access to the island and the statue
were reopened on July 4, 20137. Public access to the balcony surrounding the
torch is still prohibited for security reasons since 1916.
