Jizan is a small and populous province of Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea, on the border with Yemen, bordering the provinces of Asir and a little of Mecca, with about 300 km of coastline and hundred islands.

Geography

It consists of four regions:

• Al Sarawat Mountains (Al Hazoun district), with Mount Fifa (3600 m),

• Al Hazoun forests and pastures

• irrigated fruit zone, fertile alluvial plains: coffee, fruits: bananas, apples, grapes, lemons, mangoes, oranges, papayas, plums, tamarins ...

• the coastal zone, or Tihama, a narrow strip of more than 300 km separated from the sea by the coastal marshes: cereals (barley, millet, wheat), vegetables.

History

Jizan or Jazan would be the former Al Mikhlaf Al Shimani.

The region has a dozen archaeological sites, from different cultures: Asir, Upper Jizzan, Jabal Jahfan, Qalaat Abi Arish, Qalaat Al Abla ...

The province was attached to the Saudi kingdom, but part of the population claims its regional peculiarities.

Tensions have been disrupting the border area of Yemen during the Saada war since 2000.
