summer;
almost everywhere rains are very rare and concentrated from November to April.
However, there are differences between the areas that need to be taken into
account.
THE COTES
Along the
coasts of Saudi Arabia, both western and eastern, the climate is desert and
particularly mild in winter, even hot in the central and southern part of the
Red Sea. 'in summer it is very hot everywhere, but it is stuffy on the Red Sea
coast, while it is a little drier, and therefore more torrid, on the coast of
the Persian Gulf.
On the Red
Sea coast (called Tihamah), the average temperature in January is 14 degrees
north, in the Gulf of Aqaba, where it can sometimes be cold at night, 25
degrees in the south, where it There is no winter and so it's hot all year
round. Summer is very hot everywhere.
Here are the
average temperatures of Al Wajh, in the north-central part of the coast.
The Red Sea
is warm enough to swim throughout the year, even in the north, although it goes
down to 23 ° C in February and March, while it becomes very hot in summer. Only
in the northern part, in the Gulf of Aqaba, the sea becomes a bit cool in
winter, as the temperature drops to 21 ° C in February and March.
Already in
Jeddah (or Jeddah), in the central part of the coast, the winter is hot, in
fact the average in January is 23.5 degrees. The summer is very hot, in fact
the peaks are 39 degrees between June and August, but it is especially the
humidity of the sea that makes the heat oppressive. On the other hand, in days
when winds blow from the inside, the temperature can reach 50 degrees. Rains
are very rare: the rainiest month is November with only 20 mm.
In Jeddah,
the Red Sea is a little warmer in winter than in the northern part of the
coast.
Mecca is not
exactly on the coast, but is situated in the plains, to the west of the
mountains, and is also hot all year round, and even warmer than Jeddah,
especially in summer, when peaks are normally around 42/44 degrees. On the
other hand, the distance from the sea makes the heat drier, and therefore a bit
more bearable. However, Mecca is really a very hot city, as it normally exceeds
40 degrees for several months, from May to September, during the year 300 days
with more than 32 degrees, and the average annual is also 30.5 degrees. Mecca
is
Mecca is a
very sunny city, although in summer benches of clouds can pass. But this
phenomenon is even more pronounced in the southern coast of the Red Sea, which
during the summer from June to September receives the passage of cloudy systems
from Africa as part of the south-west monsoon ( v. below); these cloudy systems
can also unload a bit of rain on the mountains.
And so in
Jizan, in the southern part of the coast, in July and August there is only 7
hours of sunshine per day, and there may be a bit of rain. On the other hand,
the high humidity makes the heat (there are however 38 degrees in the summer
days) very heavy.
On the coast
of the Persian Gulf, the weather is sunny and desert: the winter is very mild,
but less hot than in the Red Sea: the average in January is between 12 and 17
degrees. At night it can get cold, especially in the north, near the border
with Kuwait, where the minimums can fall near zero.
The summer
is very hot and sunny, a little less humid than on the Red Sea coast, because
the prevailing winds are from the northwest (initially of the Iraqi desert),
and therefore do not come directly from the sea.
In Dammam,
in the central part of the coast, the average increases from 15.5 degrees in
January to 37 degrees in July and August. During the year it falls only 90
millimeters of rain, most of which occur from November to April. During the
winter, very cool days are possible, or even cool nights. The summer is
crushing, with peaks of 50 degrees.
The Persian
Gulf, in the central part where Dammam is located, is somewhat fresh from
January to March, while it becomes very hot from May to November. In summer,
the Persian Gulf becomes the hottest sea in the world, even more so than the
Red Sea.
In the
northernmost part, near the border with Kuwait, the sea in winter is a little
cooler, so that it drops to 18 degrees in February and March. In the
southernmost part, in the small coastal strip between Qatar and the Emirates,
the sea in winter is on the contrary a little warmer, and the temperature of
the water does not drop below 23 degrees.
The Arabian
Peninsula is largely occupied by a plateau called Najd (or Nejd), at an
altitude of between 400 and 1200 meters. In addition to the rocky deserts,
there is a series of interconnected sand deserts, called Nefoud, ad-Dahna and
Rub al-Khali, the latter being the largest, a vast expanse of sand that
occupies the south of the country. The plateau, desert like most of Saudi
Arabia, has a fairly uniform climate: almost always sunny, mild in winter, but
with very cool or cold nights, and very hot in summer, but with low relative
humidity. The main differences occur in winter, when the northern part is much
colder than the southern one.
In Haïl, in
the north at 1,000 meters above sea level, the average January temperature is
10.5 degrees, the August temperature is 32 ° C. In winter, the days are
generally mild, but at night it is cold. The average rainfall is 150 mm per
year, with a maximum of 40 mm in November and no rain from June to September.
The capital
of Riyadh is located in the center of the country, 600 meters away. Winter,
from December to February, is very mild: the average temperature in January is
13 degrees. Sometimes at night the temperature can approach zero, while there
is no shortage of warmer days, even in winter, when approaching the 30 degrees.
In Riyadh it falls only 100 mm of rain, from December to May, of which a
maximum of 30 mm per month in March and April. In summer, from June to September,
it never rains, and temperatures are very high, with peaks around 44 degrees in
July and August, but peaks of 45/47 degrees. However, the humidity is very low.
Medina is
located in the west, 600 meters above sea level like Riyadh, but in winter it
is milder than the capital, as the January average is 17 degrees, with maximums
of 23/25 degrees. Sometimes it can be cold at night, but more rarely than in
Riyadh, and on the contrary also in the middle of winter it is often 28/30
degrees. Summer is similar to that of Riyadh, torrid and sunny.
In the
south, the desolate and mysterious desert of Rub al-Khali is quite hot even in
winter, with peaks of around 25/26 degrees in January. At night it can be quite
cool, but it does not go below zero. In summer, the southernmost part of this
desert is affected by the south-west monsoon, so some banks of clouds can pass,
and sometimes even a shower can burst.
In Saudi
Arabia there are no rivers of any importance, but as in the desert countries
there are many dry rivers, the wadis, which can be transformed into ephemeral
torrents after the rains. are generally short-lived but violent.
MOUNTAINS
The western
part of Saudi Arabia, called Hedjaz, is traversed by a chain of mountains
parallel to the coast of the Red Sea. In the north (surrounded by green), the
climate is desert, without rain in summer, but in the winter there are rains,
and at higher altitudes also snowfall, as in Djebel al Lawz, a mountain in the
north-west rising to 2,580 meters.
In the
southwestern mountainous region, in Asir province (surrounded by bordeaux),
there are several peaks that exceed 2,000 meters, including the highest
mountain in Saudi Arabia, the Jabal Sawda, 2,990 meters high. Here the climate
is attenuated by the altitude, and in summer, especially in the south, it is
affected by the south-west monsoon that affects southern Arabia, bringing some
rain from June to September , as well as extensive cloud coverage. Even in
spring, between March and May, a little rain may fall. In some areas, it
exceeds 250 mm per year, so that one enters the semi-desert climate; the
exposed slopes have verdant landscapes and terraces where water sources are
used for irrigation.
At Abha,
2,000 meters above sea level, the average temperature in January is 13.5
degrees, that of July 24 ° C.
WHEN TO
START
In much of
Saudi Arabia, where the winter is mild (the Red Sea coast in the northern part,
the central plateau area where Riyadh and Medina are located, the Persian Gulf
coast) and (Mecca, Jeddah and the south-central Red Sea coast, Rub al-Khali),
the best period runs from December to February, as in the rest of the year the
heat is ) or may be (in the spring and fall) excessive.
But in the
north, north of Riyadh (see Hail, Rafha, Tabuk) you can avoid the winter that
can be cold, choosing the months of March and November. In the extreme north,
in the Syrian Desert (see Turaif, Al Qurayyat) where the winter is longer, you
can choose April and October.
For the sea,
the best month is November in the Persian Gulf (in March the sea is still a
little cool, while in April it begins to be hot), and the months of March and
November in the north-central part of the Red Sea, while you can go from
November to March in the south-central part of the Red Sea, south of Jeddah,
because there it is hot even in winter.
IN THE
SUITCASE - WHAT TO BRING
In winter:
for the Syrian desert, warm clothes, jacket, bonnet, umbrella or raincoat,
scarf. For the Persian Gulf coast, mid-season clothing, t-shirt or shirt for
warm weather, sweater and jacket for the south-central part (see Dammam, Al
Khobar), a warmer jacket for the north see Khafji), scarf against the wind,
perhaps an umbrella. For the Red Sea coast, north of Jeddah, light clothing for
the day, sweater and light jacket for the evening, which sometimes can also be
used in Jeddah and Mecca; in the southern part (Jizan), simply a scarf against
the breeze and possibly a sweatshirt for the evening. For the shelf, Riyadh and
Medina, mid-season clothing, in layers, warm jacket and hat for the evening
especially in the north; for the Rub al-Khali, light clothes for the day, a
scarf or a turban, boots or desert sandals, pullover or jacket for evening and
early morning. For the western mountains, in the north, warm clothes, warm
jacket and jacket, in the south, mid-season clothes, light in the day, sun hat,
pullover and jacket for the evening.
In the
summer: for the Syrian desert and the plateau above 700 meters (v. Haile),
light clothing, sun hat, sweatshirt or sweater for outdoor evenings, scarf; for
Mecca, the plateau and Riyadh, the Rub al-Khali and the Persian Gulf coast and
the Red Sea, very light, wide and natural fiber clothes, desert turban, sweater
and scarf for air conditioning; for the western mountains, light clothing for
