solar energy advantages and disadvantages
Solar energy is the fraction of electromagnetic energy from the sun
that reaches the surface of the Earth, after filtering by the earth's atmosphere.
On Earth, solar energy is at the origin of the cycle of water, wind
and photosynthesis carried out by the vegetable kingdom, on which the animal
kingdom depends via food chains. The Sun is the source of most of the energies
on Earth except for nuclear energy and deep geothermal energy, 1.
Energy sources derived indirectly from solar energy include:
Hydroelectric energy, derived from the kinetic energy of water whose cycle
depends on the Sun, the tidal engine resulting mainly from the effect of
gravitational forces of the Moon and more weakly of that of the Sun and
depending on other parameters such as the geography of the coasts. There is
also the wind energy derived from the kinetic energy of the wind linked to the
heating and evaporation of the water generated by the Sun, the rotation of the
Earth and the Coriolis effect, hydro energy and wave energy related to the
movement of oceans and rivers, wood energy and biomass energy, and very low
temperature geothermal energy from superficial layers of soil heated by the
Sun. We can add the fossil energies from organic materials created by
photosynthesis (coal, oil, natural gas ...) to which is added the biochemical
energy of living organic matter.
This article deals with the energy produced by man by capturing the
radiation emitted by the Sun, mainly in electrical or thermal form. It is one
of the main forms of renewable energy.
Techniques for using solar energy
Techniques for directly capturing some of this energy are available
and are constantly being improved. Passive solar, solar photovoltaic and solar
thermal can be distinguished.
Passive Solar
The oldest and certainly the most important, albeit discrete, use
of solar energy is to benefit from the direct contribution of solar radiation,
that is to say passive solar energy. In order for a building to benefit from
the sun's rays, solar energy must be taken into account during architectural
design (double façades, south-facing glass, etc.). Thermal insulation plays an
important role in optimizing the proportion of passive solar input in the
heating and lighting of a building.
In a passive solar home, solar energy helps to save energy.
Passive housing refers to a building whose heating energy
expenditure is reduced by about 80% compared to a new house built in accordance
with the German thermal insulation standards of 1995, which are already very
demanding standards. Passive solar energy therefore makes it possible to heat
all or part of a building for a practically zero proportional cost, taking
advantage of the conditions of a site and its environment, in accordance with
the principles of Bioclimatic Architecture.
Solar Thermal
Solar thermal energy consists in using the heat from solar
radiation. This radiation comes in different ways:
• in direct use of heat: water heaters, solar heating, including
solar ovens, solar cookers and dryers, for example;
• in indirect use, the heat used for another use: solar refreshing,
thermodynamic solar power stations, etc.
Mechanical Solar
Applies to devices that convert solar radiation (heat) into
mechanical motion that can either be used directly by means of a Stirling
engine, for example, or transformed into electricity (the common feature of all
techniques is concentration of solar energy via solar concentrators
(heliostats, mirrors, etc.).
Solar Thermodynamics
Solar Thermodynamics is a solar technique that uses solar thermal
to produce:
• Electricity, on the same principle as a conventional power plant
(production of high pressure steam which is then turbined).
• Mechanical work by transforming a liquid into gas or by directly
heating a part of the engine as in the Stirling engine.
