Job Description

Job Title: Locum Consultant in Emergency

Medicine

Department: Emergency Medicine

Professionally Accountable To: Medical Director

Managerially Accountable To: Divisional Manager for Surgery

Objectives of the Post

 To undertake the duties outlined in the Consultant Job Plan.

 To share responsibility for the leadership, organisation, and effective

operation of the Department.

 Responsible for the clinical management of patients attending the ED, and will

provide advice and supervision for staff in the ED.

 Act as Trauma Team Leader when on duty within the department, and lead

cardiac arrests within the ED.

 To provide clinical leadership, supervise, teach and train junior medical staff,

and be involved in the teaching of nursing staff, paramedics, medical

students, etc., attached to the Department.

 To take an active part in Clinical Audit and other Clinical Governance issues.

 To improve clinical practice by peer review and changing working practices to

maintain a high standard of medical treatment and care.

 On call duties will be shared with the existing Consultants working towards a

1 in 5 rota when all posts are filled.

 Will be encouraged to develop any other particular interest within the

Department, subject to the agreement of other colleagues and the availability

of resources.

 To participate in continuing medical education activity as appropriate to the

speciality.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of being admitted

to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK. If

you are a trainee, currently on a UK training programme, and are not yet on the

specialist register, please provide details of your expected CCT date on your

application form. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of doctors

must be on the Specialist Register at the time of their application to be eligible for

consideration for a Consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments

Committee.

Job Plan/Timetable

Direct Clinical Care: 8 PAs on average per week. This is made up of 6.5 PAs for

"shop floor" time working in the ED including assessing and treating patients,

supervising junior doctors and ENPs, and medical shift leadership in the ED. In

addition DCC time comprises 0.5 PAs for on-call time/shift over-runs and 1.0 for non-

"shop floor" DCC (e.g. reviewing results, answering complaints).

Supporting Professional Activities: 2 PAs on average per week. This is made up of:

1.5 (for CPD, audit, service development and clinical supervision) plus on average,

0.5 for additional ED lead roles.

The locum consultant will share consultant-level resident clinical duties within the

Emergency Department with two other senior clinicians. On Call is on a 1 in 3 basis

from 5pm until 8am during weekdays and all day during weekends.

There is expected to be considerable flexibility in the working pattern. Any changes

will be subject to the agreement of the other Consultants, and in negotiation with

Service Manager.

The post-holder’s basic job plan will typically include 10 PAs

Job Planning will be based on a partnership approach. Consultants are asked to

prepare a draft job plan which is then discussed and agreed with the Clinical

Director. Job plans will list all the NHS and any private duties of the consultant, the

number of Programmed Activities for which the Consultant is contracted and paid,

the consultant’s objectives and agreed supporting resources.

The duties and responsibilities set out in a Job Plan will include, as appropriate:

 Additional NHS responsibilities – determined against the agreed Trust tariff

allocation

Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine

Essential Desirable

Full registration with the GMC √

Possession of FCEM or equivalent √

Possession of CCST / CCT in Emergency Medicine (or be within 6 months

of obtaining)

Possession of 2 current Resuscitation Council certification; ALS, ATLS,

APLS/PALS

Instructor status for one of ALS/ ATLS/ APLS √

Ability to lead a trauma team √

Level 1 USS competence (FAST/ vascular access) √

Able to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within the speciality

and make decisions at consultant level. √

Experience of pre-hospital trauma care and/or helicopter emergency medical

services

Ability to take full and independent care for patients √

Substantial experience in development and delivery of a high quality clinical

service in emergency medicine

Ability to contribute to teaching by:
