DONATE A VEHICLE

If you want to give a vehicle to a member of your family, a friend, a business or an organization, you have to transfer ownership to an SAAQ service point. Conditions apply.

 

Before going to an SAAQ point of service

 

Call Revenu Québec This link will open in a new window, if:

 

the vehicle is registered elsewhere than in Quebec

the person to whom you give the vehicle is not related to you or if it is a company or an organization

THE TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP CANNOT BE DONE ...

 

If the person donating their vehicle has an unpaid fine recorded in their driving record.

 

GIVE A VEHICLE TO A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY

 

Go to one of our service points to transfer ownership of the vehicle and prove the family relationship.

 

You will complete the Declaration of transaction between related individuals form concerning a road vehicle registered in QuebecThis link will open in a new window.

 

We will give the form to Revenu Québec so that your family relationship is recognized.

 

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED BY THE SAAQ FOR THE TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP

 

You must present:

 

your driver's license or other official document with photo

a document proving the family link, such as:

a birth certificate (large format)

a copy of birth certificate

the original or certified copy of a contract or certificate proving your marriage or civil union

a driver's license with the same address and last name

If you are under 18

 

You must bring the Consent of the holder of parental authority form (PDF, 139 KB) This link will open in a new window completed by your father, mother or guardian.

 

If you don't have a driver's license

 

Call us to find out what documents to bring to register the vehicle.

 

If you can't introduce yourself

The person who will do the registration in your place must bring the original of the Power of Attorney form (PDF, 178 KB) This link will open in a new window filled in by you.

 

COSTS AND PAYMENT

The payment methods accepted at our service points are as follows:

Interac (debit card) - except at some of our points of service

one or more automatic bank debits, if a specimen check is provided

check or money order

Payment by credit card is not accepted.

 

Payment of GST and QST

 

In general, there is no GST or QST payable if the vehicle is donated to a family member.

 

GIVE A VEHICLE TO A FRIEND, BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION

 

If the vehicle is donated to a business or organization, you must present a contract or invoice that states that the vehicle is donated and provide the name of the new owner.

We collect the amount of QST, usually based on the list price tooltip_ally of the donated vehicle.

 

DONATE YOUR OLD VEHICLE TO CHARITY

 

If your vehicle can no longer be used, you can discard it and donate it to charity.

MANDATORY PRIVATE INSURANCE

 

You must have private insurance for a minimum amount of $ 50,000. This amount must be $ 1 million if you are a transporter and $ 2 million if you are transporting hazardous materials. This is liability insurance.

 

If you are uninsured and stopped by the police or involved in a traffic accident causing more than $ 500 damage to other people's property:

 

your driver's license or your right to obtain one may be suspended

your vehicles may no longer have the right to circulate

you will receive a fine, the amount of which will vary depending on the type of vehicle
