The mountain
In the north of the country, Jebel
Akhdar, the "green mountain", culminating at 3,020 m altitude, is the
central and highest part of the Hajar Mountains, the backbone of the country.
It separates the Bâtinah (literally the "belly"), the coastal plain
that borders the Dahirah mountains (the "back"), the trays of the
interior.
The main town of the hinterland is Nizwa,
the ancient capital, located in a large oasis, meeting the tracks of the
caravaneers of the north and the south. You have to visit the mountain villages
and terraced crops.
To the south, in Dhofar Province, is the
mountain range of the same name, of which Jebel Samhan is the highest peak. As
Jebel Akhdar is in a protected military area, a permit (issued by the
government and obtained easily from Nizwa hotels, for example) must be obtained
before visiting the area.
The desert
It occupies two-thirds of the territory.
As we move away from the shores inland, it changes color and height from plains
dominated by white, then yellow and red, to dunes that can reach 300 m in
height. .
At the edge of the Wahiba sands, there
are a handful of Bedouin markets, such as Al Wasil and Al Mintirib. Roub
al-Khali, which is more easily reached from Salalah, remains the world's
largest desert, poorly known and rarely crossed, except by some Omani tribes.
The coast
Oman has a total of 1,700 km of
coastline. North of Muscat, the beach area extends from the city of Shinas to
Barka. South of Muscat, much of the coastline on the Arabian Sea borders the
desert, forming huge beaches and salt marshes, such as Bar el Hekkam.
The coast - which is accessed by trails -
is low and straight, often preceded by small islands, coral reefs and
sandbanks. The main cities are Sour, historical center of trade and
shipbuilding, and Qouriyat, a fishing port. Several dive centers are located
along the coast around Muscat (Sawadi and Bustan), which are accessed by paved
roads.
The Dhofar (the south)
From an administrative point of view, the
western province of Dhofar occupies two-thirds of the country. The population
is concentrated in the southernmost part - bordering the Arabian Sea, on the
border with Yemen - in an area that juxtaposes the coastal plain, plateaus and
a mountain range (the Dhofar Mountains, maximum height 1,463 m in Jebel
Samhan).
The Dhofar is relatively populated thanks
to the summer rains of end of monsoon and its hot and humid climate. It is here
that the inhabitants of Muscat come to take refuge during the hot summer
months. The majority of Dhofar's population consists of sedentary farmers
growing coconut and banana trees.
The main city is Salalah, whose souk of
incense is very famous. Must visit in the region: Mirbat, the ancient capital
of Dhofar, the road to the desert Roub al-Khali and the lost city of Oubar, the
ruins of the city-port of the Kingdom of the Queen of Sheba, the beaches of
Moughsail, and the wadis where the incense tree grows. Do not miss a visit to
Jabali villages in the surrounding mountains.
The peninsula of Musandam (the north)
The cliffs cut from deep gorges of the
rocky cape of Moussandam plunge right into the turquoise waters of Ormuz,
creating a unique landscape comparable to the fjords of more extreme latitudes.
The culmination of this mountain range that extends into the hinterland is the
djebel Harim, 1,700 m high. The famous and well-guarded Strait of Ormuz
provides a strategic location in the traffic control at the entrance of the
Persian Gulf. ; 60% of the world's oil consumption passes through the Strait of
Hormuz.
Curiously enough: Oman is one of the few
countries in the world to be discontinued; the Musandam Peninsula being cut off
from the rest of the country by a territorial advance of the United Arab
Emirates (more specifically the Sharjat emirate). Musandam tours are by plane
from Muscat or by road from Dubai.
A more sporting alternative is the
practice of cabotage in coves and inlets carved into the rock. One of the most
spectacular fjords in the region is the Khor al Sham Fjord, which can be traced
back to Khasab. Swimming, snorkelling and visiting tiny fishing villages are
the most popular activities of the program.
Musandam is undoubtedly the best kept
jewel of the Sultanate of Oman. It opens today to tourism, with its beaches
nestled in peaceful bays, its clear waters and its fishy bottoms, its mountains
and its unspoiled nature.
The islands
For those who love secret and unspoiled
natural spaces, the big island of Al Masirah and the 5 islands of Kuria Muria
are worth the trip. Al Masirah is 40 km long, covered with sand and inhabited
by members of the Janabah tribe, who live fishing. Rare fact: on this island,
no tree grows. The islands of Kuria Muria will fill the divers in search of
limestones very fishy. It is possible to reach the island of Masirah by plane
from Muscat.
