Must see Qatar
A few hours of
stopover are enough to see the highlights of Doha: the beautiful buildings
overlooking the long promenade of the Corniche; the splendid Museum of Islamic
Arts, of incredible richness; Souk Waqif, the nerve center of Qatari social
life. Beyond, the artificial islands of The Pearl offer a striking contrast
with the crenellated ramparts of the old forts and the dunes of the great south
enclosing the Inland Sea. But here, it will take at least one more day on the
spot, or two.
Al Zubara
The ruins of the
pearling village, abandoned, classified by Unesco; and the neighboring fort,
dating from the early twentieth century, the most beautiful of Qatar
Doha
The Corniche, a
wide promenade embracing the Doha Bay, lined with skyscrapers; the Museum of
Islamic Art; the souk Waqif; The Pearl, with its buildings and villas, dreams
of a new Qatar Riviera
Inland Sea
(Inland Sea, Khor al-Adaid)
A sea enclosed in
the great erg of South-Qatar, which one reaches in 4x4, while crossing the
dunes; the most inescapable
must-haves from
Qatar!
Activities,
sports and leisure Qatar
Qatar seems to
have woken up one morning and taken a passion for sport ... In a few years, the
emirate has hosted the Asian Games (2006), the Asian Football Cup (2011), the
Championship of the world of handball (2015) and welcomes month after month
plethora of major competitions - golf tournament, open tennis, international
rally, motorcycle grand prix, Qatar cycling tour, event of the motorboat world
championship, without forgetting the many winter riding events and camel racing
(see "Traditions").
However, it was
the arrival of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar that made the most of the news.
Because of its displacement in winter (because of summer temperatures too
high), suspicions of corruption, but also because of the terrible working
conditions of immigrant workers employed on the sites of its infrastructure.
Beyond that, the
whole country has equipped itself in a decade with stadiums, swimming pools and
other sports halls. Not a big hotel without fitness center, not a morning along
the Corniche without a lot of joggers (expats!) ...
The Qataris
themselves largely prefer football and indoor sports (air conditioning). They
are also passionate about the Olympic Games, despite the failure of their
candidacy for 2020 and the modest number of medals collected so far (4, all
bronze).
For a
decade, the country has nationalized with big checks of international athletes
likely to bring medals ... Only constraint for them: adopt an Arabic name! To
support its efforts, Qatar launched in 2005 the Aspire Academy, inaugurated
with great fanfare in the company of Pele and Maradona. A museum of Olympism
and sport is even emerging near the Khalifa stadium.
What to do in
Qatar?
As a tourist,
sports activities are quite limited. You could offer a sea kayak or canoe trip
in the mangrove, a jet ski or water ski tour, an afternoon of kitesurfing (in
Zekreet) or sailing ... all activities practiced mainly through the beach clubs
large hotels. Qatar also has a golf course of international stature (18 + 9
holes).
Next to Aspire
Park, with sports facilities, jogging tracks and bike rentals, Villagio's large
shopping center, inspired by Venetian architecture, has an ice rink and a
go-kart track.
Scuba diving is
practiced on a few spots, including the artificial "reef" of
Messaieed, consisting of old boats and carcasses of cars sent from the bottom
and interconnected by ropes ... Visibility, here as elsewhere, is low, because
of the many construction works (the exit of the waters of The Pearl does not
help). What's more, the rented equipment is not very good.
Wadi bashing and
surfing
Finally, it is in
the sand desert of southern Qatar that we enjoy the best. Very popular with
locals and visitors alike, the wadi bashing or dune bashing outings consist of
nice 4x4 rides through the dunes. We usually go on an excursion with
specialized guides who know how to avoid the pitfalls of fech fech and do not
remain stuck like so many visitors came with their rental 4x4 (often without
permission from the company) ... Some descents will make you feel some chills
as the slope is sometimes steep. You may enjoy it then to go downhill skiing or
surfing.
On the road to
Seaside and the Inland Sea, you will also see a lot of buggy rentals to explode
in the dunes
