Tobacco and the child:
What is passive smoking?
According to the French Office of Tobacco, passive smoking is
"the involuntary inhalation of smoke emitted by one or more smokers".
This notion of "passive smoking", also called environmental smoking,
was highlighted in 1868. However, the first study conducted on the pathologies
induced by this form of smoking dates only from 1981.
To understand the phenomenon, it should be noted that the smoke
inhaled by the smoker (called the main stream) is very different from that
consumed by the cigarette (secondary stream) or that rejected by the smoker
(tertiary current). Curiously, the smoke that emerges between two puffs is much
more dangerous than that inhaled by the smoker, because it contains more toxic
(carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide ...) and carcinogens (tars, benzene ...).
Moreover, even if it seems to have dissipated, the toxic substances it contains
remain suspended ... for 3 hours! Passive smoking is therefore the most common
source of domestic pollution, due to the high concentration of toxic products but
also the intensity and duration of exposure.
Why is it dangerous in children?
You may not know it, but tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000
chemicals! Among them, nicotine, a psycho active that reaches the brain very
quickly, but also toxic products such as carbon monoxide, irritants (aldehydes,
acrolein, arsenical and ammoniacal derivatives ...), and more than 50
carcinogens (tars , 3,4-benzopyrene which is a hydrocarbon ...)! Breathing
tobacco smoke is therefore far from insignificant for health, because these
toxic substances are deposited and encrusted everywhere: on the walls, the
floor coverings, the curtains ... In the infant and the small child, the
effects of passive smoking are felt from a cigarette smoked by the entourage.
Why ? Simply because their defenses are not yet well developed. Newborns, for
example, are particularly vulnerable because their noses do not filter yet
