A safari park is a form of extensive zoo where animals are presented on day parole. This "zoo reserve" formula offers visitors the impression of animals living at liberty, drawing inspiration from the vast territories, especially African, where wildlife is preserved.
A safari park is a commercial tourist attraction, more like a reserve than a zoo, where visitors are in their own vehicle to observe wildlife, rather than walking to see the wild animals in cages or small enclosures. A safari park is much larger than a classic zoo.
The main attraction of safari parks is the presence of large animals in sub-Saharan Africa such as lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, hippos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and ostriches. As a complementary attraction, visitable areas (by car or on foot) are added for animals from other continents. However, safari parks often have other tourist attractions: golf courses, fairground rides, miniature trains, promenade boats, life-size reenactment of dinosaurs, plant labyrinths, playgrounds, restaurants and souvenir shops.
The precursor to the safari parks was Africa USA (1953-1961) located in Florida where its first animals were imported directly from East Africa.
The first safari park to be visited by car outside Africa was opened in 1966 in Longleat, Wiltshire, England.

Most safari parks in western countries were established for a short period of 10 years between 1966 and 1975.
