Transportation and Travel Oman

Plane

Sib (Seeb) International Airport is close to the capital. All major car rental companies are represented. Also rental offices in the cities.

To connect Muscat to Salalah (in the south of the country), the best means of transport remains the plane with the national airline Oman Air (1 h 20 flight), only to operate domestic flights.

Road

Distances between major cities and places of tourist interest are considerable.

Car

To reach the most remote places, but also hotels, markets or restaurants within the same city, rent a car. Count from 25 € per day for a car rental category A. Prefer an insurance all risks. National driving licenses are accepted, at least by international car rental companies.

Sidewalks are rare, so we always take the car, even for very small trips.

Driving is on the right and the state of the network (roads and tracks) is satisfactory.

The roads are in good condition between major cities, including Salalah. The signs are written in Arabic and Latin alphabets. The state has invested heavily to improve and expand the road network, particularly on the coast between Muscat and Sour, as well as in mountainous areas.

Watch out for animals that sometimes roam the road. Be careful too, at night, as cattle graze freely along the roads, and serious accidents are not uncommon.

The authorities have stepped up their presence on the roads and radars are numerous in the agglomerations. Failure to comply with the rules of the road (non-compliance with a red light, overtaking on the right passing through the emergency stop lane, driving while intoxicated or without a license, etc.) may lead to heavy penalties that can go as far as police custody, especially when the driver's liability is incurred in an accident.

The 4x4 is essential to visit the wadis, as well as to take the tracks and the dunes in the desert. Count about 80 € per day for a 4x4 rental.

Intercity buses

There is a good intercity bus network. New and reliable vehicles connect the main cities with good frequency and at very attractive rates. Count all the same nearly 12 hours of journey between Muscat and Salalah. You can also reach Dubai by bus.

taxis

There are individual taxis (painted white with orange wings) or collective taxis at the airport and in major cities. There is almost never a meter, and you have to negotiate the fare before you leave.
