Health and safety Syria
Given the worsening security situation in
Syria, including in Damascus and Aleppo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is
very clear: it is strongly recommended to refrain from any project of
displacement in the country. The French already on site are encouraged to leave
the territory as soon as possible. No part of the country is compatible with
tourism or with a simple trip.
Health
Syria is a healthy country where there
are no particular infectious agents. In some hotels, some pretty old posters
warn you about AIDS. Anyway, it's not really here that you will be incited to
go for a ride.
No compulsory vaccines from Europe. It is
important to be up-to-date for the "universal" vaccines recommended
for us: tetanus, polio-diphtheria-pertussis, hepatitis B, as well as for
vaccines protecting against diseases related to lack of food hygiene: typhoid
and hepatitis A .
Doctors and pharmacists
It is found everywhere in every city,
without problem. Some doctors speak French or English. Go see these preferably
(we give you the coordinates of French or French hospitals in Damascus and
Aleppo in the chapters on these two cities).
Some drugs, just in case ...
- If you come in the middle of the
summer, plan a sunscreen with the maximum index, a hat, glasses and possibly a
water bottle.
- The air is very dry in Syria, and the
skin dries quickly: plan a sufficient amount of moisturizer (body and face),
lip balm, eye drops or artificial tears for wearers of lenses.
- For skin irritations, a small
moisturizer, again.
- For difficult digestion (or too fast),
an antibiotic and a retarder of intestinal transit, loperamide.
- Aspirin or paracetamol for small
ailments and vitamin C.
There is a very small amount of malaria
in Syria, but it is a benign, never fatal, malaria. Preventive drugs are
useless. Nevertheless, it is strongly advised to protect against insect bites
and other charming critters that can transmit other diseases, such as
leishmaniasis (a parasitic disease that can be serious). For long stays in
rural areas, impregnated mosquito nets and skin repellents are highly
recommended.
Water
Avoid drinking tap water or water that is
sometimes served as a carafe or glass, at the restaurant or on the bus. It is
theoretically drinkable, but fragile stomachs can react badly. Prefer to buy
capsulated bottles (1.5 l). We find absolutely everywhere; at the restaurant,
you are usually asked one of the office on the table. Bottled water is cheap
and good, so do not take unnecessary risks.
Beware also salads, especially parsley
(especially in summer), and raw vegetables (although it's quite difficult to
avoid them in Syria). No problems in the big restaurants.
In addition, be careful not to waste
water (tap this time) in a country where it is a rare commodity.
Dangers and queries
To avoid any problem, we strongly advise
you to address hot topics (see below), especially in the street, especially
with a Syrian and especially if it is a meeting of passage. Many members of the
different police are indeed in plain clothes and are happy to hunt down the bad
citizen ... or the bad tourist who has bad thoughts.
- Topics to avoid: democracy, freedom of
the press, , Palestine, Syro-Lebanese relations ...
That said, young Syrians are not fooled:
connected to the world via the Internet and satellite TV, they will often be
happy to converse with you - but always cautiously - on all topics, including
sensitive.
