The causes of
migration
More and more men
and women are leaving their homeland in the hope of finding better living
conditions elsewhere. Growing mobility on a global scale allows more and more
people to travel to distant countries and even to other continents, states with
high standards and quality of life obviously the preferred destinations.
No country is able
to cope with the influx of foreign populations. Anxious to defend the interests
of the indigenous peoples, the majority of States adopt restrictive provisions
on immigration, while recognizing their duty to grant protection and asylum to
persons under threat.
Everyone has their
own reasons for leaving
Few people abandon
everything and live far from home for one reason. In general, migrants are
driven by motives as complex as they are multiple.
This young Italian
woman would certainly not live in Aarau if her parents had not been hired many
years ago as factory workers in Aargau. Having spent her youth in Switzerland,
where most of her friends live, it makes sense that she feels more at home in
our country than in Italy.
Similarly, the
pensioner in Zurich might not have settled in Spain for the simple reason that
the cost of living is less expensive. In fact, his decision to leave
Switzerland was motivated by climate, which has a beneficial effect on his
wife's rheumatism, and the atmosphere in residential areas for retirees, as
well as by the departure of his children to professional motives and other
upheavals in his daily life.
Finally, this
Kurdish asylum seeker would probably have continued to bear little by little
day after day the minor reprisals, the bullying and the various deprivations of
his political rights had he found work in his village or in the neighboring
regions.
Many people are
exposed to serious threats arising from the situation in their homeland.
Indeed, if opponents may come to fear for their lives when dictatorial forces
seize power, members of ethnic or religious minorities may be at risk if a
state tolerates racist violence.
In the absence of a
rule of law and a guarantee of fundamental human rights, human beings are often
victims of oppression and persecution practiced by state organs.
Many believe in a
better future
It is very often the
desire to find work and earn a living that drives people to leave. Many also
let themselves be seduced by the example of the migrants of their family or of
their "successful" village.
The majority of
people looking for work abroad regard this as a temporary step in their lives.
When they leave their homeland, it is hoping to return one day, many of them
hoping to earn enough money so that they can later set up a small business that
belongs to them in their country of origin . But all these years spent abroad,
in a world endowed with different values and customs, often make them lose
their ties with their homeland.
Migration patterns
Migration
accentuates the difficulties faced by their State of origin
People with strong
training and initiative are more likely to emigrate. As a general rule, the
emigration or expatriation of persons only sharpens the political and economic
problems of the State of origin of the persons concerned. Indeed, a
particularly large proportion of migrants are young men with strong training
and, therefore, a high degree of self-confidence. Yet the money they send to
their families left behind helps to alleviate poverty.
Consequences of
migration
Economic factors
influence policies to immigrate many states
Most states,
including Switzerland, set the conditions for entry into their territory according
to the needs of their labor market. In Western countries, large parts of the
economy lack skilled workers. Thus, a person with adequate training and
experience is more likely to find a job abroad. Similarly, there is a great
lack of auxiliaries in the fields of industry, health and agriculture, and many
countries are recruiting labor in certain countries or regions in particular.
