position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; top: -0.5em;">e siècle.

The causes of climate change

Causes and consequences of climate change
Human activities such as the use of fossil fuels, the exploitation of tropical forests and the raising of livestock have an increasing influence on the climate and the temperature of the earth.

These activities release enormous quantities of greenhouse gases, in addition to those naturally present in the atmosphere, thus enhancing the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Greenhouse gas

Some gases in the earth's atmosphere act like a greenhouse wall: they allow solar energy to enter the atmosphere but prevent it from escaping.

Many of these gases are naturally present in the atmosphere, but human activity increases the concentrations of some of them in the atmosphere, in particular:

carbon dioxide (CO2);
methane;
nitrous oxide;
fluorinated gases.
CO2 is the most common greenhouse gas produced by human activities; it is responsible for 63% of the warming of the planet caused by man. Its concentration in the atmosphere is currently 40% higher than at the beginning of industrialization.

Other greenhouse gases are emitted in smaller quantities, but they retain heat much more efficiently than CO2 and are up to 1000 times more powerful. Methane is responsible for 19% of the global warming caused by man, while this proportion is 6% for nitrous oxide.

The causes of the increase in emissions

The combustion of coal, oil and gas produces carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.
The disappearance of forests (deforestation). Trees help to regulate the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. So when they are slaughtered, this positive effect is lost and the carbon stored in the trees is released into the atmosphere, exacerbating the greenhouse effect.
The increase in livestock. Cattle and sheep produce large amounts of methane when digesting their food.
Fertilizers containing nitrogen produce emissions of nitrous oxide.
Fluorinated gases have a considerable warming effect, up to 23,000 times that of CO2. Fortunately, they are released in smaller quantities and are gradually banned by EU regulations.
Global warming

Power plants and other industrial facilities are the main emitters of CO2
The average temperature of the planet has increased by 0.85ºC compared to the end of the 19th century. Each of the last three decades has been warmer than all previous decades since the beginning of statistical surveys in 1850.

The world's largest climatologists believe that human activities are most likely the main cause of global warming since the mid-20th century.

They consider that an increase of 2 ° C over the pre-industrial temperature is the threshold beyond which the risk of attending dangerous or even catastrophic climate changes is much higher. For this reason, the international community has recognized the need to keep global warming below 2 ° C.
