Khalid
ibn Al-Walid: The knight and the deceiver of the Arabs "the sword of Allah
His
name and genealogy
Khalid
Ibn AI-Walid Ibn AI-Mughira AI-Makhzumi, nicknamed Abu Sulayman, was born in
Mecca twenty-five years before the Hegira. He came from the Banu Makhzum clan,
one of the most influential clans of Mecca with Banu Hashim and Banu Umayya.
Like most of his fellow citizens, Khalid had begun by fighting Islam before he
converted. It was he who was at the origin of the defeat of the Muslims in
Uhud. An eminent rider, an outstanding strategist, he alone could make a
difference during a battle. On top of that, our man was of extraordinary intelligence.
He had fought the Muslims in Uhud and in the battle of Al-Khandaq, but it seems
that it is more due to duty and solidarity towards his fellow citizens than by
hatred and doctrinal opposition to Islam.
There
was no known systematic opposition to Islam as well as a virulent fanaticism
for the paganism of Quraish.
That is
why, when the light of Islam reached her heart, she found favorable
dispositions there and settled there easily.
Before
its conversion
Khalid,
who was not more than 17 years old at the birth of Islam, showed great interest
in the art of war, including horses and shooting, in which he soon gained a
high reputation. He fights against the Muslims and his charge in the battle of
Uhud against the Muslims from behind was repulsed after heavy fighting.
Its
conversion
Khalid
Ibn Walid embraced Islam in the year 8 of the Hegira with 'Amr Ibn Al' As and
'Othman ibn Talha.
When
all three of them were at the Prophet's house, Khalid and Othman swore an oath
of fidelity to him, while Amr abstained. The Prophet then asked him, "What
are you waiting for, 'Amr ?!'. And he answered, "Will you, by giving you
this oath, forgive all my previous sins?"
-
"Do you not know that adherence to Islam and the Hegira lead to the
absolution of all that has been committed before," replied the Prophet, to
whom Amr swore an oath.
His
fights in the way of Allah
Khalid,
the knight Quraish and the deceiver of the Arabs in the battles turned his back
on the divinities of his fathers. During the Mouta expedition, Khalid was a
private soldier, when the Muslim leaders were killed one after the other, he
took the initiative to command the Muslim army. The victims among the Muslims
were numerous and their power weakened, the Byzantines were close to the
overwhelming victory. "The sword of Allah" came to scan the vast
battlefield with hawkish eyes and a brilliant initiation, he divided the army
into groups as the battle raged with instructions to be followed. The Muslim
army was able to open a breach in the bosom of the enemy and slip into it. The
Muslim army was able to come out safe and sound thanks to the genius of this
man.
He was
chosen to lead the right wing of the Muslim army during the conquest of Mecca.
When he entered the blessed city, he bowed his head to Allah, who had guided
him to Islam. Khalid remained present at the side of the Messenger of Allah ()
putting his genius at the service of the religion that believed in him for all
his life.
After
the death of the Messenger of Allah (), unrest broke out in various tribes
under the caliphate of Abu Bakr (Radhya Allahu Anhu). Khalid was in command of
the Muslim armies to restore order and fight if necessary. usa of his ruse of
fine strategists and succeeded in restoring order in the revolted tribes. He
fought with ardor and ardor the army of Musa'lama the Liar.
But the
Muslims had to face two powerful armies: the Byzantines and the Persians. He
commanded the Muslim army at the battle of Yarmouk against 240,000 Byzantines,
and managed the battle with intelligence. The Byzantines rushed into
mountainous columns and met with Muslims what they did not expect. The Muslims
presented dazzling scenes of their sacrifice and resistance.
Khalid
Ibn Al Walid was faithful and sincere, he did not mind being a commander or a
simple soldier. Commandment is like the profession of a soldier, both are a
means by which one fulfills one's duty to Allah. He was a warrior from his
cradle to his grave because his environment, his growth, his education and even
his whole life, before and after Islam, was the formation of a rash knight and
adventurer. Khalid possessed extraordinary strength, and he had an ardent
desire to destroy his ancient world entirely, such was the case when he strove
at the conquest of Mecca to destroy the idols.
The
Caliphate had in the meantime passed into the hands of Omar (Radhya Allahu
Anhu) who said of him "Women will never be able to bear a man like
Khalid." The glorious hero had a rendezvous with death and his last abode.
Had it not time for him to rest? He who was described by his friends as
"the one who does not sleep and leaves no one to sleep".
His
death
According
to the famous historians Tabari and Ibn 'Asakir, Khalid Ibn Walid, the saber of
Allah, died in Homs in 21 AH (644).
The
drama of his life was that a hero dies in bed. At the moment of his death, he
confided the secret he so much desired since he embraced Islam. During his life
as a militant of the Muslim cause, he ardently desired to be killed while
fighting in the way of Allah: "I have witnessed so many fights," he
said, "and there is not a place in my body who has not received a blow
from a sword or spear, or an arrow, and here I die on my bed, in spite of
myself, as the camel dies, and the cowardly perish. "While awaiting his
death with resignation, he dictated his will , in which he bequeathed his horse
and his weapons to Omar, his principal possessions, was not interested in the
things of worldly life, his only goal was always to die as a martyr or to win
victory over the enemies of Muslims had ended the renegade movements, defeated
the Persians in Iraq and the Byzantines in Syria, and was brought from his home
by his companions.
